"Personal life" section
[edit]Two different (?) IP addresses, both WP:SPAs, have twice removed the following from the article:
Personal life
His personal life raised questions in 2013 when it was revealed that he is dating a lobbyist for the California Medical Association, which often lobbies on matters involving committees Maienschein serves on. He said there is no conflict of interest and he has cleared their relationship with the Assembly Rules Committee and she with the CMA.[1]
- ^ Cadelago, Christopher (August 1, 2013). "Lawmaker dating medical lobbyist". San Diego Union Tribune. Retrieved 19 August 2013.
The first removal gave no reason except "irrelevant material". I re-added it saying "restore cited material which was removed without explanation ("irrelevant" is not an explanation)". The second removal gave the edit summary "Personal life is not related to current status as an elected official. Opinion piece is not a factual source." The reference to an opinion piece does not apply to this paragraph, which is a news item written by a regular reporter at the U-T. Personal life DOES become an issue when it carries hints of possible conflict of interest, as when he is dating a lobbyist with issues before committees he chairs. He says they have cleared it so there is no conflict of interest, and the fact that he says so is included in this paragraph, so it is neutral. However, his saying that doesn't necessarily take the issue off the table - two Reliable Sources chose to run the story. And the personal life of elected officials certainly can be relevant to their position, for example if it implies conflict of interest. I am bringing the paragraph here for discussion rather than getting into an edit war. --MelanieN (talk) 21:04, 31 August 2013 (UTC)
Update: I didn't revert the second deletion, but another editor did. Within 24 hours one of the above IP addresses deleted it a third time. I restored it and posted a note at their talk page, suggesting they should come here and discuss it if they object to the material. --MelanieN (talk) 05:13, 13 September 2013 (UTC)
Update: a new IP edited out the introductory statement about "raising questions," and I think that was a good edit. It makes the paragraph more neutral. IMO with that change the issue should be settled. --MelanieN (talk) 17:21, 17 September 2013 (UTC)
