Reference #38[edit]

I am puzzled by reference #38 to the statement that the company "remains the same legal entity incorporated on 1 October 1887". The Companies House website says that BRISTOL OMNIBUS COMPANY LIMITED was incorporated on 08/12/2003. [1] Jezhotwells (talk) 20:16, 11 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Looking into this further I see that in fact the reference is to FIRST SOMERSET & AVON LIMITED being incorporated 1/10/1887. I guess they must have had a time machine. Still puzzled. Jezhotwells (talk) 20:23, 11 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

This is the sequence of events:

Company number 25088
- incorporated 1 Oct 1887 as Bristol Tramways and Carriage Co. Ltd
- Change of name 1 May 1957 to Bristol Omnibus Company Ltd (this change is too old to be on the CH webscheck service, but it is referenced in Curtis & Walker at p.57)
- Change of name 26 Feb 1999 to First Bristol Buses Ltd
- Change of name 30 May 2003 to First Somerset & Avon Ltd

Company number 4987248
- Incorporated 8 Dec 2003 as Bristol Omnibus Company Ltd
- This is an inactive company - it seems that it was set up by the authors Curtis & Walker to preserve the company name (ref p.224 of their book)

A company can change its name, while remaining the same company, as long as the new name is not the same as the current name of an existing company. But is is quite rare for a company to have survived since the 19th century (I do not know of another existing bus company that old) Mhockey (talk) 22:10, 11 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I notice that Mhockey has amended the reference #38 so that it now points at [2], which is merely the entrance to the Companies House database. I amended it yesterday to point directly at the page within the database for First Somerset and Avon Limited as [3], which I think is much better. Could you explain? I don't think either your link or my link will take you directly to the company page on the Companies House website (at least, they didn't when I tried it just now). You have to input either the company number, the current name or a previous name. (If you enter a name, you then get an extract from the index, from which you pick the company; if you enter the number, you go straight to the right page.)
