Sources for Caleb Barnes
[edit]I am looking for additional documentation, some of which I have in my notes.
About 3 sources list his birthplace as "Owego, Broome, New York." The Tioga Historical Society tells me there was no such place, although Wikipedia explains that 2 villages (towns?) switched names. I have checked a number of genealogical and newspaper archives and not located parents or siblings. He must have had some education for the practice of law.Maineshepp (talk) 21:24, 9 February 2013 (UTC)
Barnes or Barns?
[edit]It looks to me as if at least 2 generations used the two spellings rather interchangeably. Daughter Cornelia used "Barnes" on a passport application in 1871. After she married she became "Baxter." Maineshepp (talk) 21:28, 9 February 2013 (UTC) Just found 5 news articles 1843-1863 all spelled "Barnes." Maineshepp (talk) 03:50, 12 February 2013 (UTC)
I think that all of the newspaper clippings on Caleb (or C. P.) said "Barnes"--except for the obituary! His son Charles wrote as "Barns," but his death certificate said "Barnes!" Maineshepp (talk) 04:48, 20 February 2013 (UTC)
