He's routinely listed as having died in 1899, though the exact date is proving elusive and the 2 April 1948 edition of the Daily Mirror claims 'the nearest relative to the late Alf Shelton is his brother, Charlie, another former Notts player, who is living somewhere in Southern England.' And the 6 April 1948 editon says: 'The Clamp and Shelton families, of Nottingham, have brought a satisfactory end to their search for the rightful owners of the three international caps of 1890 and 1891...Alf Shelton, one-time County player, who won the caps...They will give the caps to Charlie Shelton, 84, a surviving brother of Alf.' The death of a Charles Shelton, aged 87, was registered in Middlesex in the first quarter of 1951...
