Inappropriate discussion of Kirtland temple in introduction

[edit]

The second paragraph of the Introduction has inappropriate references to and inaccurate information about the Kirtland temple. The section currently states:

"Although Ohio was the site of the first temple built by the Latter Day Saint movement, the Columbus Ohio Temple was the first operating temple in the state for more than a 150 years. Under the direction of Joseph Smith the Kirtland Temple was dedicated in 1836; however, not long after its dedication, the persecution of the early Latter Day Saints grew severe. They were forced to leave the state and abandon the Kirtland temple."

Inaccuracies:

  • the Columbus Ohio Temple was the first operating temple in the state for more than a 150 years.— Actually, the Kirtland Temple has been operated *as a temple* since at least the 1950s by the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints (RLDS Church, now known as the Community of Christ)
  • Suggested correction: the Columbus Ohio Temple was the first temple operated in the state by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints for more than a 150 years.
  • [Latter Day Saints] were forced to leave the state and abandon the Kirtland temple.
  • Members of the Latter-day Saints movement recovered possession of the temple in 1844 and held it through 1860. Possession was contested but since members of the LDS movement were actively trying to recover it, and finally succeeded permanently in 1901, it seems inaccurate to describe the temple as "abandon"ed.

See https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kirtland_Temple#Shifting_ownership.

Since this article isn't about the Kirtland temple, I suggest removing most of the second paragraph, reducing it to, "The Columbus Ohio Temple was the first temple in the state affiliated with the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints since the dedication of the Kirtland Temple in 1838."
