Talk:Comparison of rapid transit systems

Page contents not supported in other languages.
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

I recently created this page to compare some interesting aspects of different cities' rapid transit systems. It could use a lot of work, please help!

  • First of all, most info is not cited because it comes from the other Wikipedia pages.
  • I also don't really understand the distinction between many similar systems (such as rapid transit and light rail or Tokyo Subway and Tokyo Metro). It's possible that this is the wrong name for this article, perhaps it should be Comparison of metro systems ?
  • These may be a mix between intra-city subway systems and intra-regional commuter rail. That should probably be ironed out.

Let me know if you have any comments. Cheers, Sligocki (talk) 01:17, 20 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Non-free Images

[edit]

User:Rettetast posted a {{non-free}} tag on this page and deleted the image File:Lametro.svg. It appears that some of these metro logos are copyrighted and are allowed to be used on the metro pages themselves but, perhaps, not on this page.

The non-free images are: File:Lametro.svg, File:TokyoMetro.svg, File:MTR Corporation.svg, File:Beijing Subway logo.png, File:Spb metro logo.svg, File:MetroSP.png and File:Shanghai Metro logo.svg

I would very much like to keep logos for all the transit systems, so it seems like we have three options:

  1. Create new, free images like many of the other metros have
  2. Write fair use rational for use on this page, like they have for their individual metro pages
  3. Challenge their copyright status
    1. For example, if is not copyrightable because it is just geometric shapes and text, then 100px should also not be copyrightable.

What do you all think? — sligocki (talk) 21:33, 21 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Update: I posted to Commons:Template talk:PD-textlogo/en to get a second opinion, but:

  • I've removed the fair use images from this article for failing WP:NFG. Using fair use images in lists/tables like this fails our WP:NFCC, specifically with regards to #1 and #8. Further, these logos exist at the main articles of these entities. We don't repeat logos every time an entity is mentioned. Your belief that File:MetroSP.png and File:MTR Corporation.svg qualify as PD text logos fails because no typeface can reproduce those logos. You are correct about your last four examples not being covered by that. --Hammersoft (talk) 15:52, 22 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]
  • Sligocki, I just said these images would not qualify for PD text logo, and despite that you changed them to PD text logo and restored them????? Sorry, WP:BRD, I've removed them. Please do not restore them without getting consensus at WP:NFR that they qualify. --Hammersoft (talk) 16:51, 22 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]
(conflict) Well, actually, I got a response from Commons:Template_talk:PD-textlogo/en#Second_opinion_on_logos and they think that all of the images are Template:PD-textlogo. According to Wikipedia:Public_domain#Fonts, "typefaces are exempt from copyright protection". It is ridiculous for you to say that no typeface can reproduce these, a typeface is just a set of glyphs representing letters. These glyphs are clearly meant to represent letters and thus are elements of a typeface and are not copyrightable. In addition I am disappointed at your dry view towards article editing. The images are not included here because they are needed, they are included because it makes the table easier to read and more fun/colorful/right-brained. — sligocki (talk) 17:04, 22 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]
