Popularity of the 317
[edit]I wish I could provide a proper reference for the popularity of the 317C at clear-channel stations. I know it to be true (I've seen photos of most of them and have visited a good number myself), but I don't know of any documented sales numbers for the 317C's nearest competitor, the Harris MW-50. If you visited a transmitter site in the early 1980s, it would not be unusual to find a 317C as the main transmitter, with an old RCA BTA-50F or Westinghouse 50HG as the backup. Fast-forward fifteen years, and the old RCA has been moved out and replaced by a new Harris DX-50 as the main with the 317 remaining as the aux. Ten years later and the old 317s are on their way out (often to be rebuilt and shipped to less-developed countries: old vacuum-tube transmitters may be less efficient, but they are much more tolerant of poor-quality electrical power). 121a0012 06:21, 25 May 2007 (UTC)
Trivia: the CBC Hornby site (home of CJBC 860 and what was then CBL (now commercial station CHWO) 740) was upgraded in 1978. The four 317C-2s purchased at this time (main and backup for both stations) were delivered with consecutive serial numbers. 121a0012 06:21, 25 May 2007 (UTC)
