Question[edit]

Is an article about an individual academic department really appropriate? It's clearly a very fine history department, but what makes it worthy of an article of its own? Nationwide there are probably just a handful of departments worthy of their own articles (economics at the University of Chicago, for example, or physics at Columbia), but nothing in this article suggests that Cornell's history department is one of them. If it is, the article should be expanded to show why. If it isn't, I think the article should be deleted. Otherwise we may soon see articles -- almost all of them superfluous -- about each department at each college or university in the world.

I disagree. MIT already has a slew of them including the MIT Mathematics Department and the MIT Department of Economics. A number of notable wiki-worthy professors have taught in this department. This page nicely collects them and gives a little history on the department and where it fits into the overall picture at Cornell. --Xtreambar 20:46, 12 May 2007 (UTC)

List of alumni[edit]

Is it really productive for Wikipedia to maintain separate lists of alumni for each department and/or college? We have the central List of Cornell University People and a shorter highlight list in the main Cornell University article. I am worried that it may be difficult to sort out who should be on this list vs. those other lists. For example, if a student was a history major and then changes his major before he graduates, should he be on this list? How do we document with reliable sources that a notable person was in fact a history major? What if a person only has a masters degree but not either an undergraduate degree or a PhD? What if a student has a PhD committee with professors from a number of different departments? Racepacket (talk) 14:54, 8 December 2010 (UTC)
