History

[edit]

The history of Dandenong Plaza is not included or complete. There are three distinct sections built at different times:

Myer Dandenong opened in 1974 as a standalone four level department store on McCrae Street with five level carpark - two entrances on Walker Street (then on levels 'a' and 'b') and a larger entrance on Clow Street. The Former Level 'c' was fenced off for staff parking and storage

The two-level 'Capital Centre' opened in 1989 on the site of a former Safeway Supermarket and carpark (with the 'Marina style' arch roof, opened around 1972) as well as the former Dandenong Workers Club. It included Village 10 cinemas (now Reading 6), new Safeway supermarket (still operating) and Bi Lo supermarket. A small food court called the 'Village Eatery' was located outside the cineams. It included a four-level carpark alongside Foster Street.

'Dandenong Plaza' opened in 1995 and involved joining the Capital Centre to Myer by a new three-level section of the mall through Walker Street, through the demolition of a small shopping arcade ('Dandenong Mall') and rooftop carpark located between the two. The existing Capital Centre was renovated with new roof and terrazzo flooring to match. The centre also expanded toward Clow street (including expansion of the food court, doubling its size), involving the acquisition of several small blocks of flats and the RSL 'Westwood' homestead. A new RSL was built on the corner of Clow and Foster Streets on the former site of Rudduck Street (the 1966 Melway shows the road, former RSL site and former Dandenong Workers Club Site on Map 90). The Myer Store was renovated and consolidated to three levels with Target relocating from Lonsdale Street into the former ground floor of the Myer building. The Foster Street carpark was extended and new internal ramps built. In the Myer carpark the level 'c' fencing was removed and it was open for general use and the boom gates removed. The Walker Street lower entrance was closed as it was no longer accessible as a thoroughfare. Note that Kmart did not open in its space until 1997; a smaller addition for Rebel Sport done several years later involving demolition of a small section of the Myer carpark and expansion on the northern side to compensate. — Preceding unsigned comment added by As1979 (talkcontribs) 22:47, 6 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

And if there is no source to back this up - it won't be completed, per WP:OR and WP:V. If there is a reliable source - or multiple, you may add it in by all means. -- MSTR (Chat Me!) 07:22, 7 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

(Note I am a member of the Dandenong Historical society) - pictures do exist of the construction of Myer, Capital Centre and Dandenong Plaza as well as the former Safeway (whether they can be obtained is another question). Local papers like the former Dandenong Journal would cover this as a source. The GPT website line of opening in 1989 is not entirely correct as described above (that date refers to the former Capital Centre). I will try at some stage to identify some specific article dates - the lack of online references was the reason I left this in the discussion tab. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 124.170.48.63 (talk) 20:28, 7 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]
