[edit]Why do people keep removing the name Alexandrovich from the lead paragraph? It is clear that the English (2) and Russian (3) names given do not correspond. While the article title should be the most common English name, the lead paragraph should begin with his full name. Exploding Boy 15:25, 24 July 2006 (UTC)
- Because Dmitry's legal name does not have the patronymic in it. His US passport, driver's license and all other identification documents just say Dmitry Chaplin DJAlik 12:25, 25 July 2006 (UTC)
- In that case, why does the Russian version of his name have all three? It's obvious that Dmitry Chaplin does not equal Дмитрий Александрович Чаплин. It's just confusing. Standard practice in these cases is to title the article the most common or best known name, and place the full name at the beginning of the opening sentence. Exploding Boy 02:36, 13 August 2006 (UTC)
Unless someone can provide a compelling reason not to, I'm going to either restore "Alexandrovich" in the English, or remove "Александрович" in the Russian (most likely the former). Exploding Boy 04:57, 15 August 2006 (UTC)
- Listen in Russia people do not have MIDDLE NAMES we have patronymics that are part of your legal name. When Russians move to U.S. we no longer include patronymic as part of our legal name so yes Dmitry's russian name has it and english name does not. DJAlik 22:38, 10 September 2006 (UTC)
I don't have any trouble understanding what you are saying. You seem to be misunderstanding what I am saying, however. The two names currently do not correspond. The name as given in Russian at the head of the article is clearly not equivalent to the name as given in English. This is confusing, and needs to change, one way or the other. Exploding Boy 17:38, 11 September 2006 (UTC)
- I concur! Mindman1 00:42, 25 July 2007 (UTC)
Awards
[edit]Though I think that some of Chaplin's awards are definitely noteworthy, I think that the table needs to be pared down a bit. I recommend only keeping those awards where he was a finalist (top 25? I'm not sure of the size of some of these competitions). I also question whether some of the local competitions are notable enough to include on this page. For example, if someone comes out overall as a winner of a state championship, I'd say that's notable, or if they came in 5th in a national championship, that's notable, but coming in 78th in a state championship, I think that can probably be edited out. --Elonka 04:05, 27 July 2006 (UTC)
Would it help to show how many couples have competed in a particular event in a separate column to show a significance of the tournament? DJAlik 21:56, 27 July 2006 (UTC)
Also I think a significance of the event is depending on who else is competing against. For example if the top 6 couples in the country compete in the same event I believe it would make it significant. DJAlik 22:10, 27 July 2006 (UTC)
- Yes, size of event would be helpful, as a comparison. But even in a very large competion with thousands of contestants, I don't think anything below top 25 would really count as notable for the context of Wikipedia. Maybe for a personal promotion page or a resume/CV, yes. But an encyclopedia article, no. --Elonka 22:54, 27 July 2006 (UTC)
Agreed. I will work on that. It's gonna be a bit of research, even some smaller championships were against the top couples in the country so being in the finals for that championship is notable. DJAlik 23:25, 27 July 2006 (UTC)
- The best way to prove notability, is to link to an outside source that covered the championship. If it was only covered by dance industry press, that makes it harder to prove "fame". But if something was covered in a mainstream newspaper or magazine, then definitely include a link to the article. And by the way, thanks for all your work! --Elonka 09:03, 29 July 2006 (UTC)
I recommend the following, which will reference the full results that are at dancesportinfo. Many world professional champions list fewer titles on their entry than our currently on this page, so I think these selections should be a significant start:

Is Dmitry related to Charlie Chaplin?
[edit]I'm watching Dmitry Chaplin on Season 9 of DWTS and notice that he bears a slight resemblance to Charlie Chaplin. When Dmitry smiles, I see a young Charlie. Could he be a distant relative?
Thanks!
