Interview with Peter Somerville-Large
[edit]There was a very good interview with Peter Somerville-Large on RTÉ Radio 1 (Myles Dungan presenting the Pat Kenny Show) less than an hour ago about the march of Ó Súilleabháin Béirre to Leitrim after the Battle of Kinsale. It was at 11:30 Irish time on 25 August 2008. Somerville-Large's 1974 book 'From Bantry Bay to Leitrim' about the march has just been republished, and he was speaking about how he retraced the steps of the Uí Súilleabháin in 1972 by walking their route and sleeping rough. It was a very poignant interview. You should be able to listen to it here: http://www.rte.ie/radio1/todaywithpatkenny/ Captain Fearnought (talk) 11:50, 25 August 2008 (UTC)
Ó Súilleabháin Béirre's assassination
[edit]Hi, back with a question on the article. It states: 'In 1613, O'Sullivan was murdered just as he was departing a mass; the murderer was a young Englishman who had been disfigured in a duel by the prince's son.[citation needed]'. However, in Paul Walsh's edition of Tadhg Ó Cianáin, The Flight of the Earls (Dublin, 1916) on page 3, Walsh states in the footnote that John Bath murdered Ó Súilleabháin Béirre in Madrid on 16 July 1618. I am not entirely sure that John Bath was English either (there was an important family in the Pale of that name), so that would probably have to be footnoted, too. - I created this article by moving some rough text that had been tacked on by another editor to the "Sullivan" article and adding whatever I could find online. I'd be the first to admit that I know nothing much about him. That sentence was part of the original anonymous, uncited chunk of text I moved (this is what it originally looked like). Paul B (talk) 16:43, 11 September 2008 (UTC)
- Hi Paul. Thanks for your quick reply. That was a good decision, and this article still needs to be extended as he was important in Irish terms; my interest was only resparked a couple of weeks ago by a programme on the radio, 405 years about his famous walk (see above). There are some good photos at Dunboy Castle of Ó Súilleabháin Béirre's home that could be integrated into this. The above source for his assassination says the Ó Súilleabháin Béirre was assassinated: it did not say Dónall. But the historian Pilib Ó Súilleabháin Béirre, the other possible contender, did not die until 1660 and Dónall was the only one assassinated and, furthermore, Dónall did have the title 'Ó Súilleabháin Béirre' so I think it's safe to put in this referenced information from Paul Walsh. Dónall Cam or Dónall?
[edit]The DIB entry differs from this entry, as far as I can see. Could somebody clarify the reality please? "O'Sullivan Beare, Domhnall (1560–1618), Gaelic lord and soldier, was son of Domhnall Cam O'Sullivan Beare, lord of Beare and Bantry". This Wikiepdia articles says, 'Donal Cam O'Sullivan Beare, Prince of Beare, 1st Count of Berehaven (Irish: Domhnall Cam Ó Súileabháin Bhéara) (1561–1618)... Donal's father was killed in 1563'. Were the father and son both called Dónall Cam? 89.101.231.2 (talk) 11:32, 27 May 2022 (UTC) https://www.dib.ie/biography/osullivan-beare-domhnall-a7078
- The short answer is: yes. The son (c.1561–1618) and the father (c.1537–1563) are both sometimes known by the same full name. Some sources refer to the father as simply Dónal and the son as Dónal Cam. While others (like the DIB entry you note) refer to both as Dónal Cam. Isn't particularly uncommon (then or now) for names to be the same/similar. Guliolopez (talk) 13:33, 27 May 2022 (UTC)
