Birth date
[edit]He has stated that his real birth date and his official birth dates are different during a show he attended. When I changed his birth date to his real birth date, added a note that explained the situation, and cited the show as a source; my change was reverted due to "sourcing not being sufficient enough". My source includes a clear footage of him stating his real birth date. What makes this source insufficient?
Later on, I also found this other video where his mother says that his official birth date is one year earlier than his actual birth date. This site also mentions that he once said that his birth year is 1971 while he was a guest at Çalar Saat, though I wasn't able to find the exact footage. Given these sources, I think it's clear that his real birth date is not the same as his official birth date.
Is real or official information more important for Wikipedia? If real information is more important, shouldn't we change his official birth date to his real birth date? If official information is more important, shouldn't we mention 3 June 1971 as his probable real birth date via a note?--Xindt (talk) 15:31, 22 March 2023 (UTC)
- I believe the change to the actual birth date rather than an incorrect "official" one is necessary – the source is Imamoglu's personal statement, recorded and published online, so I am not sure how much more correct a piece of information can get than that. This change also reflects his birth date on Turkish language Wikipedia (i.e., Turkish language Wikipedia has 3 June 1971 instead of 4 June 1970.
- If more clarification is needed, a note can be added on this matter to explain why and how his "official" birth date is incorrect. Drgfrt (talk) 21:21, 9 April 2024 (UTC)
Whatever we decide to do about the birth date, the article is now in a sorry state where both dates are given in different parts of the page, but all with sources that don't support them:
- In the lead sentence, we've had "3 June 1971" (his alleged "real" birthday), but with a source cited [1] that gives the official birth year (1970) – and without the exact day, either 3 June or 4 June. An IP recently tried to revert that to what the source said, but was reverted.
- In the infobox, we've had the "3 June 1971" date, sourced to a 75-minute Youtube video of a comedy show interview, where I suppose Imamoglu somewhere stated this. I doubt this counts as a reliable source, and in any case it's quite useless to the non-Turkish-speaking reader to verify the claim, without explanation – are we supposed to listen to 75 minutes of talk in a foreign language to figure out what's going on?
- In the biography section, we have the official "1970", but cited to a source that has no info about his birth whatsoever.
- Nowhere in the article is there any explanation about the discrepancy.
I'm going to change this to giving the official 1970 birthdate as primary throughout, following the vast majority of reliable sources out there, including his official biography on the IBB website [2]. The maximum we can do is a note saying that 4 June 1970 is his officially recorded birth date. Imamoglu stated in an interview in 2022 that his actual birth date was a year later, on 3 June 1971.
This should be sourced to this newspaper article [3] reporting on the TV show, rather than to the primary source of the video itself. Fut.Perf. ☼ 08:27, 10 August 2024 (UTC)
