Census data for 1850 and 1860

El Paso was not included in the 1850 or 1860 Census, but the data on the page implies that it was. I think those years should either be removed or have it somehow indicated that those two are not census data. Aurora _{(User:Horkak)} (talk) 01:29, 8 April 2021 (UTC)

El Paso, Texas → El Paso – El Paso redirects here already, and this city in Texas seems to be the primary topic for this name. It seems that someone tried to start a move request in 2014, but there wasn't much movement on the request. Natg 19 (talk) 07:28, 15 June 2018 (UTC)

• Oppose - we have a guideline for naming US settlement articles, the so-called "Comma convention". This is just another of frequently made proposals to vary from it. • Oppose per the so-called "Comma convention," which is based on the easy-to-understand and easily verifiable AP Style guideline. This is the first time I have taken a position on this issue. I would also support renaming any article to conform to the Comma Convention. This would greatly simplify creating internal links to pages about US settlements. • Comment I understand this is an WP:OTHERSTUFFEXISTS question, but how does the WP:USPLACE guideline work with primary topics, like Los Angeles or Las Vegas? Should those articles be moved to follow the "comma convention" as well?

Okay, sorry, I should have read the FAQs first. It seems like there was a consensus to keep only those cities in the AP style guide as "City" name, and the rest as City, State. I am okay with closing this RM as "Not Moved." Natg 19 (talk) 16:38, 15 June 2018 (UTC)

• Support. The AP style referred to above is a style for newspaper datelines. Datelines are mostly about branding. They let the reader know that this is an AP story, and that the AP sent a reporter to the dateline location who contributed to the story. It justifies their travel bills. People go to a news article based on the headline, which is typically written by a copy editor at the paper that runs the story. In short, it is a very different situation from an encyclopedia article title. The AP also has a dateline style for cities outside the U.S., but we don't follow that. "Other encyclopedias are among the sources that may be helpful in deciding what titles are in an encyclopedic register, as well as what names are most frequently used," per WP:COMMONNAME.
