This should be deleted (per (CSD a7), was an article about a real person, group of people, band, club, company, or web content that didn't assert the importance or significance of its subject.)

Not sure what to do about the broken external link on this page. Someone below suggests that elgoog is being updated. Not sure of wikipedia policy.

Cheers

The last sentence about elgoog.com is irrelevant. The website is called elgoog.im, NOT elgoog.com, so that last sentence should be edited or removed, as it adds no extra information to the article. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2601:647:4100:10E2:4DDD:DB62:2D36:324A (talk) 05:23, 10 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

of crack

[edit]

Erm... Is this vandalism or just a very strange way of expressing something?

killed people???

[edit]

"they killed people who used this site to get around the Chinese firewall"

I don't know if this is true but it seems to be placed strangely in the text. It appears to be biased vandalism. --Doobystew 22:45, 23 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Of course it's not true. Get a grip. 79.67.196.199 23:29, 17 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Language setting

[edit]

I'm sure elgoog used to be one of Google's language settings. Doesn't appear to be there now tho. --h2g2bob (talk) 10:15, 4 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

How accurate is the information?

[edit]

I looked at the reference that said elgooG was accessible from behind Chinese national network firewalls. It's dated 2002, and since a lot has happened since then, I am actually personally curious as to whether or not what the article says is still true. Also, elgooG is indeed up, though hosted by a German site: http://elgoog.rb-hosting.de/index.cgi?dir=/&page=/webhp%3Fhl=en Ecthelion83 (talk) 03:07, 26 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

2002?

Google hasn't been banned for a very long time. There was that fiasco when Google refused to renew its license to operate, but at no point within the last few years was Google ever banned. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Shimo1989 (talkcontribs) 02:54, 4 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I didn't do the vandalism!

[edit]

I keep getting messages that my IP adress will be banned because I vandalised this page. I'm a 55-year-old man, I did not do that and would appreciate it if I wasn't blamed for things I didn't do!! 69.171.164.0 (talk) 01:50, 16 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

somebody using your ip address might be doing vandalism. try making an account.103.130.91.2 (talk) 07:39, 2 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Merger

[edit]

There is only source which supports a single paragraph, and apparently the boldfaced comment suggests that fact is no longer true. It's been more than two years since the AfD, and nothing has been improved nor has there been additional coverage. This no longer deserves a standalone article. Daniel Case (talk) 14:43, 20 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I repaired and updated the article after researching the subject. Right now I think it contains no serious errors or outdated information. It's up to you what to did with it now (if you wanna merge, delete, etc). Personally I think its only value is as a small historical piece of information; even though there are also still a few elgooG sites out there (probably a trivial fact). Page needs update to reflect slightly different purpose

[edit]

The site now seems to list a bunch of "easter eggs" which are google themed or originated (but are now gone) from Google. I added a section to account for this, although it needs a better rewrite by someone with some writing skill. But more importantly, I think the entire article could do with an update, since it seems severely outdated. I'm not in the position to do so, and from a cursory search there aren't many webpages that talk about elgoog recently, and I don't want to overstep into own research territory, so I'm not going to try to update the page any further than I have. 2A00:23C4:E48D:5600:F0C8:9929:4A18:B283 (talk) 20:21, 20 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Doesn't seem to be owned by Google or All to Flat

[edit]

The website doesn't seem to be owned by Google or all to flat, can someone fix this? Consider reaching out to the owners of alltoflat (halibut@alltooflat.com) and elgoog.com (admin@elgoog.im). User1042 (talk) 21:00, 12 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Who said the website was owned by Google? The lead clearly says A WHOIS request shows that the domain "elgoog.com" was registered to Google LLC since 2000, but it is currently for sale. InfiniteNexus (talk) 03:49, 20 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Weird sentence

[edit]

" The manner in which elgooG came into possession of these Easter eggs is unclear, although the site claims to "restore, discover and also create interactive Google Easter eggs"."

This unsourced sentence doesn’t really make any sense to include. A developer recreating or downloading assets from Google isn't really witchcraft or worth mentioning in this way at all. I'd say remove the whole sentence. JonasTisell (talk) 19:34, 10 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Notability

[edit]

Despite my votes in the 2011 AFD, I feel the subject no longer meets notability. I found no coverage of elgooG whatsoever after the initial "it was used to circumvent censorship in China" buzz from back in the day. Since then, the site has gone under entirely outside a jokey mirror. Most of the content after that is WP:COATRACK information about the actual Google mirroring its site as a joke. Pinging @Dream out loud: from the 2011 AFD for their thoughts. Ten Pound Hammer(What did I screw up now?) 19:37, 17 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

hoaxe ?

[edit]

My instincts tell me this is a hoaxe, there are some details when we look at the 2005 page written 3 years after the incident. It is mentioned that a site called All Too Flat is doing Google mirror images. In fact, the Finnish news article was published on the same joke site. Probably a joke group fooled a few news sites with fake news on their own site. They say that the site does not technical support Japanese and Chinese, I do not think that the site has a chance to be seen in China. There is no statistical data confirming this data other than the joke group. The Japanese tested it and the site was unreachable from China.
"(by (mar...) (8358) on Sep 9, 2002 22:29 ( #162879 )) Testing complete for (...216.239...). Result: Reported as inaccessible in China It seems that the hole that would go through if you entered the IP address directly has also been blocked." White Dodecahedron (talk) 01:17, 10 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

The site is real and thus not a hoax. I accessed the site in the past 176.227.10.73 (talk) 11:32, 11 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
