"Corroboration" of Melcher claims
[edit]Strictly speaking, Lieutenant Melcher never claimed to have initiated the charge at Little Round Top; his story - that he asked permission to retrieve fallen wounded, was told that a charge was about to be ordered, and was the first company to set off - actually matches those of Colonel Chamberlain and several other officers, including the view from the Confederate lines and the wartime writing of Captain Spear himself. Spear's writings (at least those from 1898 until his death) aren't corroboration for the claims about Melcher; they are, in fact, the source of those claims. In fact, they're the only source.
