This poet wrote in Irish Gaelic and has been referred to most often in English as Owen Roe O'Sullivan, but also (in English and Irish) as Eoghan Rua (sometimes Ruaidh) Ó Súilleabháin, Eoin Rua O Sullivan, and various other alternative names. This is the most common Irish-Gaelic version of his name. Evangeline (talk) 04:55, 9 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I've never heard him referred to in English as Owen Roe. Indeed, no less than the Oxford Dictionary of National Biography also refers to him solely as Eoghan Rua Ó Súilleabháin: http://www.oxforddnb.com/index/101026777/. Dunlavin Green (talk) 16:56, 7 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Then I've read more than you have about him. The newer usage in English is the Irish spelling, which I also prefer; but that is only since about 1985. In older English-language writings-- Yeats and O'Connor, among others--, AND among the old country Irish speakers when speaking English, he was almost always called "Owen Roe" (the Munster Irishmen did not even use his last name: to them there was only one "Owen Roe"). Note that Synge calls him "Owen Roe" in "Playboy of the Western World." So please LEAVE IN the first reference to Owen Roe. I don't care if you change all the "Owens" to "Eoghans" afterwards, but there needs to be some indication at the top of the article that Owen Roe and Eoghan Rua refer to the SAME PERSON. That is not at all obvious to a non-Irish-speaker.
For another example of this, see Owen Roe O'Neill.

I've re-uploaded the tomb picture on Commons to be able to use it in the Russian wiki. Perhaps, someone will consider to change the picture in this article as well. Lantse (talk) 10:18, 6 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]
