Problematic titles & titles requiring further research[edit]

This is a temporary holding area for all this information, until it gets sorted out.

(unsorted)[edit]

  • Montana (1950) Screenplay? The U of Oregon exhibit site says he wrote the screenplay--his only one--but IMDb & another source indicate "story" only. New York Times review also says "based on a story by"--but which story?
  • (unknown story) (?), basis for the movie Apache Trail (1942); remade as Apache War Smoke (1952) Many sources note that these films are based on a story by Haycox, but none give a title. Could it have been an otherwise unpublished story written directly for the screen?
  • Heaven Only Knows (1947) Screenplay? Probably not. It looks like the screenplay was by Art Arthur & Rowland Leigh, based on an adaptation or treatment by Haycox, based on a story by Aubrey Wisberg. Or story by Haycox & treatment by Wisberg?
  • "The Outcast" (1958) This story appeared in Argosy magazine in 1958: original or a retitled reprint? Also, The Outcast is an alternate title for the film version of Man in the Saddle.
  • Guns of Fury (various dates) This title seems to have been used for various editions; one collects "Hour of Fury" and "Night Raid".

Retitled works[edit]

(I'm going to leave this list here in case someone else wants to rework the bibliography to include this info.)

  • "Their Own Lights" (1933) was reprinted as "Episode-1880" (1951)
  • "On Don Jaime Street" (1940) was reprinted as "Night on Don Jaime Street" (1951)
  • "Son of the West" (1930) was republished as Dead Man Range (1957), and Clint (1963)
  • Union Pacific (title of foreign editions, probably of Trouble Shooter) (various dates)
  • No Law and Order (title of a UK edition: which book?)
  • Lone Rider (1959 paperback: retitled reprint?)
  • On the Prod (1957 paperback: retitled reprint?)
  • Outlaw Guns (1964 paperback: retitled reprint?)
  • Brand Fires on the Ridge (collects "Brand Fires on the Ridge" and "The Killers") (1959) was reissued as Wipe Out the Brierlys (1967)

Decided to merge Novellas & Short stories sections, since there seems to be a lot of conflicting information--or simple differences of opinion--about which are "long short stories" and which are "short novels".

Also, dates on the Story collections are tentative; some may have been originally published earlier--still looking into it. --ShelfSkewed [Talk] 05:09, 6 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]
