2001 sources[edit]

While repairing vandalism and updating a link, I found the figures given for the 2001 census didn't quite match the source [http://legacy.london.gov.uk/gla/publications/factsandfigures/dmag-briefing-2003-23.pdf 2001 Census: Ethnic groups in London and other districts]. They were only trivial differences: White British in the source is 59.79% but was shown here as 59.6%, Other White 8.29% but shown here as 8.4%. The old figures match those in ONS Population Estimates by Ethnic Group, 2001 to 2005. Should we switch to using and citing the second source? NebY (talk) 13:04, 10 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

300,000 Russians in London?[edit]

I'm surprised the article currently suggests there are 300,000 Russians resident in London (~4% of the population) and are seemingly the largest ethnic grouping. However, the source used for this number (http://www.iomlondon.org/doc/mapping/IOM_RUSSIA.pdf) actually says "Unofficial estimates suggest that approximately 300,000 Russians, or those who consider themselves as such, currently call Britain their home... The numbers are, however, highly speculative and have not been formally confirmed by any authority, including the Home Office." (emphasis added). While there are undoubtedly many Russians living in London, I very much doubt they outnumber (for example) the Irish 2 to 1. Then again, maybe I'm comparing the figures from the 2001 census with more recent figures from 2007. So, sould we really be using "unofficial estimates" alongside official census data?

I also think the other numbers listed in the "Other large groups" section are worth re-examining. Astronaut (talk) 13:39, 29 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Unfortunately this is fairly typical of ethnic group articles on Wikipedia. Some editors' approach seems to be to find the largest estimate possible and then add that without any consideration of whether it is accurate. Cordless Larry (talk) 13:55, 29 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Unreferenced changes[edit]

@Southlondoneye: looks like you updated some stats in this article without providing a reference for the change. The reference "EthnicPop2021" isn't defined and produces a referencing error. I see that "EthnicPop2011" still exists in the article, is used to reference other data. Is it your intention to only update some of the data in the article, leaving behind two different sources from two different era? Wouldn't it be better to wait until the article could be updated completely and have data from a consistent source and timeframe? -- Mikeblas (talk) 14:56, 1 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Nothing heard after a couple of weeks, so I've reverted these changes. The article does need an update, but that should be done with rigor and not haphazardly. -- Mikeblas (talk) 13:39, 13 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
