awkward phrasing, help?[edit]

"was elected as a Democrat to the Thirty-Third and to the three succeeding Congresses" seems extremely awkward and unnatural to read. I'm not sure how to reword it to keep NPOV, or if it needs rewording at all. Article needs further CE and expansion most likely, but I'm not the person for that.
