Exact spelling[edit]

I changed this entry from 'Fernão da Pó' to 'Fernão do Pó'. I have not yet done anything like an exhaustive search; but from what I have examined thus far (incl. the Encyclopedia Britannica), I have only seen the name with 'do'. I decided to start making this change now since the article is being expanded, and the addition of more links would only make the matter of renaming the article more difficult later on. If anyone has any documentation of the name being listed with 'da', please share it here. Thanks, S. Neuman 15:42, 26 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I'd swear it can't be "da", for "pó" is masculine (I'm a Portuguese native speaker). 194.65.103.1 17:11, 13 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Discoverer?[edit]

I doubt that he was the discoveror of Bioko, as it must be visible from the mainland. (Both the island and Mt Cameroon are very high.) As for the other islands, St. Thomas, Prince and Annobom, alright they're too far to be seen from shore or found by coastal vessels. 194.65.103.1 17:11, 13 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Introduced Cocoa to Ghana?[edit]

I removed the following sentence from the article "He is also credited as having introduced cocoa to the West African country of Ghana, having brought seeds with him from Fernando Pó, or Bioko, island". It was already marked with a citation needed. Po may be credited with introducing cocoa, and I suppose it's possible he did so, but it seems extremely unlikely. Cocoa is native to the Americas and was first encountered by Europeans (Columbus) in 1502. Given that Po was exploring in 1472, he must have been at least 50 years old in 1502. Add in so more time for cocoa to be recognized as worth spreading around the world, and for it to get from the Americas to Bioko, and it seems that Po would've been very old or dead by the time cocoa was introduced to Ghana.192.104.39.2 (talk) 15:25, 13 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]
