[edit]Not sure that "five by" makes this book related to Hearts in Atlantis. "Five by" is a military/police phrase which is short for "five by five". The true use of this term is to describe the quality of a radio connection in terms of clarity and volume, on scales of 1-5 respectively. Thusly, a connection which is 5x5 has excellent clarity and excellent volume. When being used as a general term for "everything is cool", it's sometimes shorted to "five by". The fact that Sully used it in Hearts in Atlantis and the troopers used it in From a Buick 8 do not tie the books together, IMHO.
- Well, alright, but teh character of Dieffenbacher, [sic], does appear in both... I think. -Litefantastic 11:13, 7 September 2005 (UTC)
The Driver of The Buick
[edit]I can't say with certainty, but the way the driver was portrayed made it seem like he could have been Walter o'Dim from the Dark Tower novels.
- If you can support it by citing text that makes it more than speculation, then add it to the article. Chris Stangl 21:21, 1 May 2006 (UTC)
well it also sounds more like a can-toi to me becaouse of the jacket and the wierd looking face
- Seems completely unrelated to me. Grasping at shadows. Given that the only report of the driver's appearance is from an unreliable witness who compared it to a cartoon character... 71.17.149.220 00:18, 4 November 2007 (UTC)
Of course it's related. This thing is a can-toi car, just like in Hearts in Atlantis. Have to be blind not to see it. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 138.163.106.71 (talk) 16:40, 26 November 2008 (UTC)
spoiler warning?
[edit]should there be a spoiler warning under summary? i'm about to read the book and dont want to read the summary, as odd as that sounds. Miles 03:08, 9 June 2006 (UTC)
- So... add one? Chris Stangl 06:40, 9 June 2006 (UTC)
- Wikipedia doesn't do spoiler warnings. See WP:CENSORED. - DustFormsWords (talk) 22:05, 16 November 2009 (UTC)
Fair use rationale for Image:Buick8.jpg
[edit]Image:Buick8.jpg is being used on this article. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in Wikipedia articles constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.
Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to insure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.
If there is other other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on the other images used on this page. Note that any fair use images uploaded after 4 May, 2006, and lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.BetacommandBot 16:05, 1 June 2007 (UTC)
isn't the last paragraph wrong?
[edit]Here's what was written, "The rest of the staff arrive on the feeling something bad may happen, all of them helping recall the story of the Buick's origin at their station, and manage to pull Ned and Sandy free, but not before Sandy glimpses into the open portal of the Buick's trunk and sees remnants of both Ennis and Brian Lippy on the other side."
Now I'm right now looking at the book, and the page that I think it's talking about says this, "The inside of the Buick was gone, cored out by purple light. Some unspeakable, unknowable conduit had opened. I was looking down an infected gullet and into another world. I might have frozen in place long enough for the suction to renew its hold on me and pull me in-to pull both of us in- but Arky was screaming" well that's the main part of the paragraph and NO mention of seeing Ennis Rafferty or Brian Lippy. Amben27 07:43, 24 September 2007 (UTC)
- Sandy later recalls seeing remains (clothing, jewelery, whatever) from both Ennis Rafferty and Brian Lippy. It's pretty hard to find a specific fact on a book like this since it is temporally mixed. Nevertheless I am POSITIVE this information is given in the book. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Nunocordeiro (talk • contribs) 02:50, 23 October 2007 (UTC)
- well i remember reading the paragraph i believe that was mentioned, and the latter part of the part i wrote was the main part of the paragraph i thought was mentioned. Amben27 23:53, 23 October 2007 (UTC)
- I just re-read the book. When Sandy is pulling Ned back he sees into the other world, and he sees Lippy's swastika necklace and cowboy boot, as well as Ennis's Stetson and Ruger. Not in the same paragraph, but in the same recollection. I think 'remnants' might be the wrong word. 71.17.149.220 05:56, 4 November 2007 (UTC)
- I edited it slightly to clarify, and also removed the part about it resembling the Wastelands. Too much of a reach to be considered factual. 71.17.149.220 05:59, 4 November 2007 (UTC)

Relation to Dark Tower
[edit]I was surprised the can-toi connection wasn't revealed in greater detail in either DT or FAB8. Am I mistaken, or did FAB8 make blantant references to the Beams? It's been a while since Ive read it, but can anyone confirm this? Cedelong (talk) 16:27, 16 November 2009 (UTC)
Connections to Black House/The Talisman?
[edit]It's been a while, so I'm not 100% sure, but I seem to recall that the accent the "owner" of the Buick is described as having is described in the same way as a character from Black House (whose name I forget), i.e. almost German, emphasis on certain syllables, etc. Also, I seem to recall that the view of the other world Sandy sees through the portal matches the description of specific parts of The Territories featured prominently in Black House (and to a lesser extent in The Talisman). Can anybody confirm this? -- Y|yukichigai (ramble argue check) 06:19, 4 February 2010 (UTC)
Second to feature car???
[edit]Actually, in "Low Men in Yellow Coats" novella in "Hearts in Atlantis" low men in yellow coats drive something that looks like a car but is in truth some sort of magical thing. So I would maybe revise this "second supernatural car" novel descriptor.
Although, "Hearts in Atlantis" is technically not a novel so maybe there's the loophole. 176.39.35.184 (talk) 13:25, 1 August 2024 (UTC)
