pronunciation
[edit]Anybody know how this name is supposed to be pronounced? --Zvika (talk) 08:37, 19 June 2008 (UTC)
- Approximately "Gahbor Segø:", where "ø:" is a longer version of the vowel that is, for example, written as "ö" in German. Similar to the "i" in the English word "bird". (Or even more properly, "Segø: Gahbor", since Hungarian names should be rendered in (Family name) (Given name) order, though this is mostly reversed in an international context.) 81.182.216.15 (talk) 16:14, 19 September 2008 (UTC)
- Thanks, I did my best to add IPA pronunciation, please correct me if I'm wrong. --Zvika (talk) 06:34, 26 April 2009 (UTC)
- So which is his family name? and if he went to the US, why wasn't his name Anglicized like other Hungarians? 58.152.252.15 (talk) 05:28, 28 December 2010 (UTC)
- The things named after him use "Szegő" so presumably that's the family name. --146.141.1.91 (talk) 13:43, 22 September 2011 (UTC)

Name spelling
[edit]In most English-language sources Gábor Szegő is instead written as Gabor Szegö (acute accent on á removed and double acute on ő changed to a diaeresis). This is true even in Szegö's own works: for example, Orthogonal Polynormials (1939) and Toeplitz Forms and Their Applications (1958). I wonder if this is similar to transliterating Cyrillic characters e.g. we have an article on Mikhail Shubin rather than Михаи́л Шубин. In support of this is that the original Hungarian name is in the other order: Szegő Gábor. Any thoughts? Quietbritishjim (talk) 18:09, 8 July 2013 (UTC)
