Ohio Wesleyan

[edit]

Cbl62, the Ohio Wesleyan football record book lists "George Dygert" as coach in 1894; see https://owu_ftp.sidearmsports.com/custompages/files/fb/2021/fb21.pdf. Jweiss11 (talk) 16:54, 7 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

I had removed it because (a) it was unsourced, and my searches turn up (b) zero contemporaneous coverage of Dygert at Ohio Wesleyan in 1894, and (c) a good deal of coverage showing that Dygert was a player for Michigan in 1894. I will dig a bit further. Cbl62 (talk) 20:10, 7 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
I searched further and have found zero contemporaneous support for the assertions that he coached Ohio Wesleyan in 1894 or Illinois College in 1895. Not only is there an absence of contemporaneous coverage; there is also reliable sourcing that he was otherwise occupied during both of these seasons. These assertions both appear to be false. In those days it was possible to have been a player at one school and a coach at another, as the coach was often times someone who just worked with the team at some point before or during the season, not necessarily someone who was on the sidelines for every game. The Illinois College Football Record Book has "G. B. Dygart" coaching one game in 1895. Jweiss11 (talk) 04:50, 8 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Case in point, it seems that Gustave Ferbert was also co-coach at Indiana in 1894. See: https://www.newspapers.com/clip/90222138/the-indianapolis-journal/. Jweiss11 (talk) 05:17, 8 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
