Show line and work line?
I find it extremely strange that there is no mention of the distinctively separate show line (American and German) and work line (East German, West German and Czech work line varieties). Lot of talk about the breed's work abilities but no mention that most of them are not sloping back show line dogs but more compact and agile work line animals with square hips. Why is this? 176.72.36.94 (talk) 17:53, 26 December 2022 (UTC)
- Provide some reliable sources discussing the show lines vs. the working lines, as well as the capability differences between the normal and sloping backs, and they'll be good to include here. --jpgordon𝄢𝄆𝄐𝄇 18:48, 26 December 2022 (UTC)
- Here are some factual pages explaining the five main variations of the breed. Actually the West German working line is closest to the original German shepherd while the American showline dogs are the furthest removed from the original ideal. As they are so popular these showline dogs are usually presented as the typical GSD, also here. There has been talk about separating these two main varieties (show/work) as they are now so far removed from each other in appearance, physical ability and temperament. English is not my native tongue so maybe somebody could write a chapter about the different variations of german shepherds, mostly concentrating on show and working line general differences, not the finer points of all the five subvarieties.

The title should be "German Shepherd Dog"
"German Shepherd" could then be a redirecting pointer to the official "German Shepherd Dog" page. "Dog" is an integral part of the breed name in both USA AKC and UK TKC registries. [1] [2] Ckeilah (talk) 20:12, 27 February 2023 (UTC)
- The AKC standard appears to use it interchangeably with merely "German Shepherd." - Julietdeltalima (talk) 22:51, 27 February 2023 (UTC)
- German Shepherd is the WP:COMMONNAME by far. What some organizations (inconsistently) consider the "official name" isn't how Wikipedia determines the title of the article. - Aoidh (talk) 22:58, 27 February 2023 (UTC)
- Agree with above, German Shepherd is the common name (not need for the 'dog' descriptor). Randy Kryn (talk) 23:44, 27 February 2023 (UTC)
- "Dog" is not a descriptor, it's part of the name of the breed. But I've lost this argument in the past. I've reverted and we'll see if WP:CONSENSUS in this regard has changed. --jpgordon𝄢𝄆𝄐𝄇 00:11, 28 February 2023 (UTC)
