Red belt?

[edit]

Isn't the red belt in it too? Isn't it the belt before the brown belt?--Razionale (talk) 19:58, 17 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Kup, geup, gup and kyū

[edit]

It seems to me that kup/geup/gup is just the Korean form of kyū. Is there any reason for having a separate article, rather than simply mentioning this name there?

Moreover, which term is used in taekwondo? I first heard of martial art grades from the Taekwondo chapter of Luke Jackson's book Freaks, Geeks and Asperger Syndrome, which mentions no other name than kup for this grade range. This is consistent with it being a Korean martial art, but contradicts the kyū article at the moment, which states "Coloured belts are worn by kyū ranked practitioners in many martial arts, including judo, karate, and taekwondo."

Anyhow, assuming my inkling is right, I propose that we add these names to the Kyū article, and redirect this article there. Any problems with this? — Smjg (talk) 18:04, 10 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Support - merging into Kyu article seems very sensible, as the Geup one is so small and unreferenced. Trafford09 (talk) 18:16, 10 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Support The geup system is derived from the kyu sytstem, and has not evolved to the point where a wholly separate article is needed - they're essentially the same thing in different languages. Just as we don't have articles for both Lutefisk and Lipeäkala, so we should not have separate articles for geup and kyu. Yunshui  21:22, 10 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]
