What if...?
[edit]I remember that according to West German TV coverage of the events in 1985, the candidate named Romanov was considered a "hawk", and a picture of him was shown on which he looked rather unfriendly. On the other hand, the other guy with the funny spot on his head was called a "reformer", and was shown with a nice picture. One wonders what would have happened if Romanov would have won ... POV issues and lack of references
[edit]I stumbled on this article by chance and, after reading it carefully, I am sorely tempted to revert the article to one of its early stab versions.
There are many highly subjective and unsourced statements here, mainly in the "Gorbachev vs Romanov" section. E.g.: "it was managed to unduly portray him as an opponent of reforms, a claim definitely proven to be wrong". Where and by whom was this claim "definitively proven to be wrong"? And where is all this information about Romanov's character being the target of rumours spread by "Gorbachev and his associates" coming from? Either some sources need to be cited here or this kind of stuff needs to be removed as representing POV pushing.
Another example: "The main reason for this outcome lies in the fact that contrary to Gorbachev who knew very well to establish excellent relationships to both the so-called "old guard" (for instance, Gorbachev enjoyed the explicit trust and support of Chernenko) as well as the young "reformers" and who was able to skillfully befriend with the various factions inside the central party leadership, Romanov for a number of reasons by far didn't dispose of the influential connections and ties of friendship that his opponent had at hand."
Apart from POV issues, there are also semantic problems with this extremely long and confusing sentence. I have read it several times, but still could not unparse the sentence properly, especially its concluding portion: "Romanov for a number of reasons by far didn't dispose of the influential connections and ties of friendship that his opponent had at hand." What exactly is being meant here??
