[edit]NB I have edited the Pinyin pronunciation of this name, in which the last character is "tāo" (not táo) -- any doubter can confirm this, as I did, with reference to an authoritative dictionary such as Hanyu dacidian.
Alternative spellings of his name
[edit]These need to be added. For example, Illustrated London News, October 13 1877, page 362: "Kuo-Ta-Jin, the Ambassador Extraordinary from the Emperor of China, has replied to an address sent to him from a meeting representing the Society of Friends held in London a month ago".
