Did You Know
A fact from this article appeared on Wikipedia's Main Page in the "Did you know?" column on January 19, 2011.
The text of the entry was: Did you know ... that the winners of the 1871 Belmont StakesHarry Bassett, the 1872 Belmont – Joe Daniels, and the 1873 Belmont – Springbok, were all owned and trained by the same person?

Discrepancies[edit]

There are many discrepancies in the sources regarding Harry Bassett and his dam. It also appears that he may not have been awarded a champion racehorse. Tb Heritage, which lists winners for that era does not list him.Cgoodwin (talk) 08:05, 11 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

which sources disagree about his dam, you really can't get much more authoratative than the stud book itself. As for the championship - before 1930, they are much more informal - Hewitt lists him as champion, but Bloodhorse doesn't. Ealdgyth - Talk 12:05, 11 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]
The American Stud Book, Vol. I, 1867 does not appear to list either Canary Bird or her sire the imported, Albion. Unfortunately the early SBs have many errors and omissions, manufactured pedigrees etc as identification was not required and there were many duplicated names, too, adding to the confusion.Cgoodwin (talk) 02:24, 12 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Perhaps, but the updated version I have (from 1884) which incorporates many of the changes and updates Bruce got after the publication of his first volume, does have her, right on page 275. Bruce's first editon of the ASB was very much a work in progress, so it's usually better to go to the later printings of the ASB for information rather than the first couple. I note that the Hall of Fame seems to have no issues with his pedigree (and they aren't afraid to call a half-breed a half-breed - as they do with Pan Zareta - who most definitely had Quarter Horse blood in her - Mittie Stephens is listed in the appendix to the ASB as by Shiloh, a QH). All sources (including Aus SB, TbH etc) agree on Harry Bassett's breeding, no problem there. It is just Canary Bird's foalings etc and Harry Bassett's breeder etc. Some of HB's produce sold for $1,000, although they were far from notable.Cgoodwin (talk) 03:14, 12 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]
