Name change

[edit]

The name of this article has been changed, without discussion, from "Environmental issues with coral reefs" to "Human impact on coral reefs". I have changed the name back, since the article is not just about "human impact", but environmental impacts in general, such as starfish. If there is to be a name change, the matter should at least be open for discussion. --Epipelagic (talk) 20:58, 21 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Agree. This section may contain anthropogenic effects, but many natural effects as well. Esoxidtcontribs 19:22, 18 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Disease

[edit]

There should be a section on disease. Both coral and coral reef pages lack much detail about disease. I'll see about adding this section. Esoxidtcontribs 19:29, 18 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Sunscreen is killing coral and reefs around the globe

[edit]

The sunscreen that snorkelers, beachgoers and children romping in the waves lather on for protection is killing coral and reefs around the globe. And a new study finds that a single drop in a small area is all it takes for the chemicals in the lotion to mount an attack. http://www.tampabay.com/news/environment/sunscreen-is-killing-coral-and-reefs-around-the-globe/2250601 — Preceding unsigned comment added by 50.252.107.21 (talk) 06:47, 21 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks. I added something to the article (you could have added it yourself). --Epipelagic (talk) 07:40, 21 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Critique

[edit]

Organization

[edit]

I feel as if the beginning of the summary should start with the environmental issues with coral reefs first, since this is the title of the article and then talk about the human impact on coral reefs.

References

[edit]

Citation number 65 makes good points about the coral reefs in the Philippines but the original source is outdated and no longer available to access. Perhaps this information could be updated with this article also about the coral reefs in the Philippines. [1]

Hawaii

[edit]

I feel as if a section about the coral reefs in Hawaii should be added to this article because like most other reefs they are being affected by coral bleaching and increased sea surface temperatures which in turn leads to coral reef diseases. [2]

Conflicting title and lead

[edit]

The lead should not conflict with the title. It should describe the scope of the article as suggested by the title. · · · Peter Southwood (talk): 05:15, 12 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

"Issues" is a vague term. What is the intended scope of the topic? · · · Peter Southwood (talk): 05:40, 12 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Section on the impact of oil spills on coral reefs

[edit]

This article was used for a Wikipedia project in an Oceanography class. As a part of this project, I have added a section about the impact of oil spills on the life of corals and their symbiotic relationships with bacteria. MRR1993 (talk) 20:12, 21 April 2022 (UTC) MRR1993[reply]
