Hotel[edit]

There's also a hotel called Loftleiðir. I don't know how to add disambiguation pages, so i can't add it myself, but i think it should be mentioned at least. --85.82.198.72 19:44, 15 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Keflavik barter[edit]

I seem to remember there was a trade-off between Icelandic and US authorities, under which the latter grudgingly tolerated Loftleiðir's low-cost operations, in exchange for USAF's entitlement to use Keflavik Air Base? Must have been in the Cold War period. Details, anyone? Jan olieslagers (talk) 17:40, 17 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Content previously located at Icelandair[edit]

I expanded this article by content covering Loftleiðir that had previously been included into the Icelandair article. Subsequently, I removed it from Icelandair. This move turned out to be controversial, it was challenged and reverted by User:Pontuskóngur, with the rationale "Icelandair is considered to be as much a continuation of Loftleiðir as the old Flugfélag Íslands." Still, in my opinion this is not a reason why all about Loftleiðir should be covered at Icelandair, because the Loftleiðir article does exist. As it appears now, the Icelandair section is a whole duplicate. This situtation obviously is not desired. So the removal of the content at Icelandair just seems logical.

It may be that Loftleiðir and Flugfélag are considered to be predecessors of Icelandair to equal parts. But as I understand (though without being an expert here), Flugfélag bought Loftleiðir's shares in the Flugleiðir holding company in which the merger was organized. So essentially, Icelandair is purely created out of Flugfélag. By the way, this is why the date the airline was founded is given as 1937 (when Flugfélag was founded), not 1944, when Loftleiðir was created.

Another possibility is to also move the Flugfélag content into a separate article, thus creating a situation similar to British Airways, which was formed out of British European Airways and British Overseas Airways Corporation.

Any thoughts and comments on this matter? Remember the most important point: It just can't stay as it is now, because The Icelandair section is a pure duplicate. --AdAstra reloaded (talk) 09:12, 15 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

„But as I understand (though without being an expert here), Flugfélag bought Loftleiðir's shares in the Flugleiðir holding company in which the merger was organized.“ This isn't correct. The two companies merged and shareholders of Flugfélag accuired 46,5% of shares in the new company but Loftleiðir's shareholders got 54,5%. There was debate for years if this was fair deal and some people bear grudges to this day.85.220.26.90 (talk) 17:32, 30 December 2011 (UTC)Þorvaldur Sigurðsson[reply]

I agree with getting rid of the Loftleioir stuff from Icelandair. If all of it is on this page, there is no need to have it at Icleandair. This has been proposed since November 2011 so let's just remove the info (or shorten it if it's all included here. —Compdude123 03:09, 1 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Icelandic AirlinesLoftleiðir Icelandic – The Loftleiðir website repeatedly mentions itself as Loftleiðir Icelandic and not once mentions itself as Icelandic Airlines: [1] and neither does the Icelandair website: [2] suggesting that the airline's name was changed to Loftleiðir Icelandic. We should use the most recent name of the airline. Idmsdmsalescaleneiviq (talk) 16:15, 14 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]

  • Oppose. The first reference in the article [3] shows that the "Icelandic Airlines" name was used from 1949 until at least 1970. The period after 1973 is generally covered at the article Stodir, which notes that it was originally called Flugleidir, and until 1978 "'Loftleidir' had used 'Loftleidir Icelandic', 'Icelandic Airlines' or just 'Icelandic' for international marketing and Air Iceland used 'Icelandair'." The first link given above is not relevant to this case because it concerns the post-2003 revival of the brand name, which is basically unrelated to the historical airline covered in this article. Guess we should provide a separate coverage for the new airline. Idmsdmsalescaleneiviq (talk) 03:46, 15 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Well, yes, but actually doing it is a different matter. The point of the new Loftleiðir is to make as much use of the fleet of Icelandair group as possible, including unused Icelandair aircraft. They have done two trips to the southern hemisphere on a lease, which might make it notable.--Snævar (talk) 20:10, 15 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]
  • Oppose The current Loftleiðir airline is an lease only company. It is the daughter company of Icelandair group, the same holding company as Icelandair. There is no link between the current Loftleiðir and the old one.--Snævar (talk) 19:59, 15 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]
