The British Indian Empire redirects to the British Raj; the Indian Empire almost exclusively refers to the Mauryan Empire in India. So this is how it should be kept. 123.239.31.207 (talk) 06:54, 18 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

The majority of links to this page are using this redirect as it has been for a long time to point to British Raj. If this is not acceptable then put in an WP:RfC and get it changed by consensus, and make sure that all the redirects are fixed. It may be that the best result for this page is as a dab page. But that is something that a RfC can sort out. -- PBS (talk) 16:44, 13 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]
A few things — "the Chinese Empire", with an emphasis on "the", referred to multiple polities historically commonly called the "Chinese Empire" or "China". In the Indian context, none of the empires (except the British Indian Empire) currently listed were actually called the Indian Empire, rather they were Indian empires (i.e., empires which were Indian). Only the British Indian Empire was formally called the "Indian Empire" or "India" which is why this article redirected to British Raj until a recent RfD decided to convert it to a disambiguation page. Terms like Empire of Hindustan would in a long stretch translate to Empire of India, and others terms like Jambudvipa , Al-Hind.
Mauryan dynasty is also known as First Indian Empire (generally) (descriptive sense).
The Mauryans were called "Indian Emperor" or "King of the Indians" in diplomatic exchanges.
I don't see any reason arguing with you, but obviously Middle India, East India and so on are not same as just India. Jambudvipa was not the formal name of the Mauryan Empire, Ashoka refers to the subcontinent as such and doesn't specifically say the official name of the empire was Jambudvipa. His title too was Magadha-raja as observed in his epithets. None of the Mauryans called themselves "King of the Indians" either. Rather the title was used by various Indo-Greek kings. Your argument regarding Mughals is correct. The formal name of the territories under the British Raj was indeed the Indian Empire, see the British Indian passport for instance. See any government map issued by the Raj. Please do not ping me. PadFoot (talk) 15:18, 23 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I've restored the earlier version. Please note that this is a disambiguation page that lists empires in the historical India. The idea is that if someone is searching for, say the Sikh empire, but only recalls that it was in India, they can arrive at that page through the disambiguation page. You should not draw out a subset of empires that you think are associated with the term "Indian Empire" and try to make an article out of the disambiguation page. Definitely not without consensus.RegentsPark (comment) 15:00, 23 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
