Illustrations[edit]

What, this article has pictures of a service patch of a unit which may or may not have been the one he was in, and of a plane that may or may not have had something to do with him (the captions don't say), but no picture of the man who is the subject of the article? Are my priorities out of order? --Piledhigheranddeeper (talk) 22:11, 28 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

As the article notes, we know that Mitchell served as a United States Air Force weather officer in Alaska from 1952 to 1955, when he observed Arctic haze. At that time 58th Weather Reconnaissance Squadron was stationed in Alaska, and was flying WB-29s, production aircraft modified to perform weather monitoring missions. Our articles may be wrong, though milhist is usually pretty good, or perhaps another squadron duplicated this work out of Alaska, but both seem unlikely.
Your priorities are right, and a portrait of Mitchell is featured by Weart,[1] but unfortunately this was taken after 1923 so is not public domain, and arguing for fair use is a hassle I didn't have time for when expanding this article on 20 February. The photo is credited to AIP Emilio Segrè Visual Archives, or it may be possible to find another portrait. . dave souza, talk 08:22, 29 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]
