Start date for J. Ross Robertson Cup(s)

[edit]

I am aware there is more than one cup bearing the name of John Ross Robertson.

  1. Senior hockey competition in the OHA Senior A League (1890–1979) and OHA Senior A Hockey League
  2. Top tier of junior hockey, now the Ontario Hockey League

I am having difficulty establishing start dates for either. I'm hoping there's an answer out there somewhere. I'm wondering if anyone has access to this book:

Podnieks, Andrew; Hockey Hall of Fame (2000). Silverware. Bolton, Ontario: Fenn Publishing Company. ISBN 1-55168-296-6.

I have learned that the Cosby Cup was awarded until replaced by a Robertson Cup. Also, in the book "100 Years of Dropping the Puck" (A history of the OHA), it mentions Robertson cups for senior teams before 1910, but is not clear on the junior teams. I can verify 1934 as the start date for it being awarded for OHA Junior A, but maybe sooner?

If anyone has more information, it's much appreciated. Flibirigit (talk) 04:22, 5 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]

A long time ago, @Alaney2k: edited Cosby Cup, using this book as a reference:
{{Cite book |title=Silverware |last=Podnieks |first=Andrew |author2=Hockey Hall of Fame |year=2000 |publisher=Fenn Publishing Company |location=Bolton, Ontario |isbn=1-55168-296-6}}

Is there any chance you still have access to that book? Flibirigit (talk) 13:17, 4 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]

@Flibirigit: No, I don't have a copy. I can get it out of the library today, though. I am passing that way. Alaney2k (talk) 13:41, 4 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]

If you could, please do. I'm looking for more information on the older trophies, such as the J. Ross Robertson Cup and the George Richardson Memorial Trophy. Some of the present information on Wikipedia is not adding up. Flibirigit (talk) 14:00, 4 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@Flibirigit: I have the book. I see that there are -three- Robertson Cup trophies, but only one article on Wikipedia. We should probably decide what to do, or put it to wp:hockey. Alaney2k (talk) 16:20, 5 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]
I'm happy to know I wasn't crazy. There should be three; one for Senior, the second for Intermediate hockey, and the third for Junior hockey. The two lesser known trophies, are mentioned in their respective league articles. Do you have starting or foundation dates for the three trophies? Flibirigit (talk) 19:07, 5 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@Flibirigit: There is only one starting date listed, for the senior-level. I added that to the article. But, there is not much in the HHOF book. It's not an academic institution after all. If you've been to the HHOF, you'll see all sorts of errors in the various exhibits. Like saying Frank McGee was born in the 1890s, which would have made him 10 years old when he helped the Ottawa Senators win the Stanley Cup. Though they do have a curatorial staff, it's just some volunteers. I've been to their resource centre. It's no museum-level system. It's basically a store-room with some files and a bunch of stuff that's been tagged. The OHA website doesn't have much to offer either. I hope we can find the dates in the Toronto newspapers online. I noticed on the icehockey wiki article for the J. Ross Robertson Cup has an old photograph of a cup. The caption mentions it was donated in 1910 for juniors. Hopefully we can find out which newspaper that came from. My hunch is that the Toronto Star has the best archives. Flibirigit (talk) 22:28, 6 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]
