I have moved the "Esdale" page to this page; simply because "Esdale" is a mistake. His surname is Esdaile. This fact is confirmed by a wide range of sources, including the catalogues of the Library of Congress & the British Library and, for example, a recent work of high-level "hypnotic scholarship" (Gauld, A., A History of Hypnotism, Cambridge University Press, (Cambridge), 1992) -- all of which show the surname Esdaile (and, more importantly, none of the records that I have been able to consult indicate that Esdaile ever used such an alternative spelling of his surname at any time during his life).Lindsay658 00:00, 30 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Tone and citations

[edit]

This article has recently been extensively rewritten by a single author, and while much solid new material and sources have been introduced, it now needs to be edited to have an encyclopedic tone, in particular a Wikipedia tone. Right now it reads like an academic essay, and one that argues a particular point at length (that Esdaile's method is distinct from animal magnetism and hypnotism), which is not appropriate for an encyclopedia. There are also too many long excerpts, and the citations need to be made into a Wikipedia format. BrightVamp (talk) 12:15, 14 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]
