Distance of stars

[edit]

At http://www.messiermarathon.com/astro_timeline.htm I found the following statement: "James Gregory makes the first realistic estimate of the distances of the stars. Gregory assumed that the other stars were just as bright as the Sun and then calculated how distant they had to be to match their apparent brightnesses." If someone can confirm this, we should add it to the article as it seems to be a major astronomical achievement. --88.73.157.111 (talk) 13:07, 16 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Madhava of Sangamagrama

[edit]

Is the reference to him really necessary? His work did not lead to any practical applications, whereas Gregory's discovery of these series (I'm presuming) had an influence on Taylor's theorem, which has important applications in physics and engineering. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 124.189.68.210 (talk) 09:27, 10 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

About the refimprove tag

[edit]

Someone tagged the article with "refimprove". If someone wants to solve this problem, there is a list of references in http://www-groups.dcs.st-and.ac.uk/history/References/Gregory.html that can be helpful. Chen10k2 (talk) 02:16, 11 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Confusion

[edit]

There seems to be some confusion between refraction and diffaction in the article. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 82.27.200.192 (talk) 10:57, 23 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]
