Total Winnings Discrepancy

[edit]

In the first section it states that James has a winning "combined total of $2,714,416" (this includes $250,000 for his ToC win). Under "Game show appearances" >> Jeopardy! it states that "Holzhauer won a total of $2,464,216" during his 33 wins. But 2,464,216 plus 250,000 equals 2,714,216 or a discrepancy of $200 compared to the figure in the first section at the top. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Xapie128 (talkcontribs) 02:47, 10 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Nickname

[edit]

Not sure what the source is for the "Holtzy" nickname now in the article, but this article indicates that he is known as "Jamie" to friends, which is consistent with my understanding. Robert K S (talk) 21:22, 2 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Both the presently cited references say "Jamie" and neither says "Holtzy", so I'll be bold and change it. Robert K S (talk) 21:25, 2 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]
The nickname was removed with an IP edit [1] with the edit summary "fixed typo". I have no preference whether the nickname is included or not but if it is to be disincluded for good reason then the two refs after the name should be deleted since they serve no other purpose than to source the nickname. Robert K S (talk) 05:35, 30 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]

I was able to find no source for “Holtzy” nickname. —AWRcore (talk) 23:08, 7 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Table

[edit]

The table of episode results should stay. B137 (talk) 08:34, 13 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]

I completely agree and will boldly revert the deletion after making this edit. User:AldezD cites WP:EPISODE, which does not apply to his edit. WP:EPISODE is specifically described as a "guideline [which] aims to promote the creation of high-quality articles about television shows and their episodes. This includes lists of episodes, television series/season articles, and television program articles." This article is about a person, not the show itself. While it is at least in part WP:OR, there are likely reliable sources that can be used to verify the information on the table. Frank AnchorTalk 12:09, 13 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]
This content does not meet WP:V nor does it meet WP:EPISODE. Excessive listing of daily episode statistics does not meet the guidelines linked above; specifically it is not "high-quality" content. It also and fails WP:NOTSTATS and WP:IINFO. Yes, he is an accomplished champion. However, the recentism of coverage and his accomplishments odes not negate the earlier linked guidelines. Articles for similarly-successful Jeopardy! champions with long winning streaks or previously-broken records (Ken Jennings, Roger Craig, Brad Rutter) do not feature daily episode list content. Any specific episodes where records have been met or exceeded can be sourced using Template:Cite episode. A table similar to Roger Craig (Jeopardy! contestant)#Records would be appropriate if it is properly cited. AldezD (talk) 12:34, 13 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]
For now, we can keep the table of episode results, pending results for the winning streak. As for the notes column, we should also mention when and if James Holzhauer surpasses Ken Jennings's winnings. As of May 3, 2019, James is about halfway to matching Ken's cumulative non-tournament total on an inflation-basis. 9March2019 (talk) 15:27, 13 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]
This response does not address the guidelines mentioned above. It is WP:OPINION and contains WP:OR related to "inflation-basis" of total. AldezD (talk) 15:32, 13 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Is it appropriate to mention he was in a comic strip?

[edit]

This is the strip but I'm guessing we want an independent source.— Vchimpanzee • talk • contributions • 21:15, 17 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Likely falls under WP:IPC and is not a significant reference to mention. AldezD (talk) 22:41, 17 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]

When to update win count/total?

[edit]

I noticed that the sentence with his number of wins and total winnings was edited this morning at 5:20 AM CDT, which is before when the show first airs at 9:30 AM CDT and well before most of the country sees it. I presume it was edited by someone with access to the program ahead of its scheduled airing. I think it shouldn't be updated until it has aired, and since the earliest airing of the show is 9:30 AM CDT, the information shouldn't be published here until around 9:55 AM CDT. Personally, I would hold off until the evening, when it will have aired in most of the country. I don't think think this falls under WP:SPOILER because that's about information which is already available to the public, while this deals with information leaked ahead of its intended release time. Gus PollyTC 14:29, 20 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Let's wait at least until 7:30 PM EST (when the episode ends) so that there are reliable sources to confirm the results. Otherwise, it may be WP:ORIGINAL and/or WP:CRYSTAL. 9March2019 (talk) 14:40, 20 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]
As far as I know, the show airs in some west coast markets at 7:30 PST (10:30 EST). Therefore, I think it would be best to try to hold out until 11:00 pm EST to ensure the whole continental U.S. avoids spoilers. --Bcschneider53 (talk) 16:59, 20 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]
User:9March2019 and User:Bcschneider53's responses directly contradict WP:SPOILER, which basically says information should not be deleted just because it spoils the plot. In my opinion, once there is a verifiable source that states he won or lost and how much he earned (this source would most likely be the episode itself), then it can be placed here. So if it airs in its first market at 10:30 am Eastern, then the content could be updated around 11:00 am Eastern. Frank AnchorTalk 17:20, 20 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]
@Frank Anchor: It's okay to have spoilers in the article as long as there are reliable sources to confirm them; otherwise it will be considered speculation, an on-going issue with Big Brother. 9March2019 (talk) 18:24, 20 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]
@Frank Anchor: My apologies, didn't know WP:SPOILER allowed that. In that case, I am okay with updating it as soon as one of us sees it (using the episode as a citation of course). --Bcschneider53 (talk) 17:40, 20 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]
@Bcschneider53: no problem! Frank AnchorTalk 18:13, 20 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Colored Background

[edit]

It has been established green would be used in scores that made the list for Top 10 Highest Single-Day Winnings and yellow for scores where the game was not a runaway at the end of the Double Jeopardy round. I think we should use red for the score where James Holzhauer ends his championship reign; eventually that day will come. 9March2019 (talk) 17:04, 24 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]

It appears that red is being used for the game in which Holzhauer is defeated now, so we're good. --Wow (talk) 22:41, 3 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Also, we should have a color key separate from the table itself, as shown in Big Brother 18. 9March2019 (talk) 22:52, 3 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Date of birth

[edit]

Don't see any source (is it reference or source...i'm new to wikipedia) for Holzhauer being born in July 1984. For the record i googled and his profile from MyLife appears to have been removed (which is odd since 90% of people usually show up on mylife). Maybe someone here knows him personally and knows what his actual date of birth is. Foldfile (talk) 18:10, 28 May 2019 (UTC) According to Records Finder his birth date is 6 August 1984 — Preceding unsigned comment added by 77.137.94.7 (talk) 11:26, 9 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]

The footnote 9 presumably explains why there is doubt about his birth year, surprising in the 1980s. Unfortunately is is a paid subscription site, and so useless for further information. I wonder if circa is appropriate, since that implies it could be as far off as at least 1983 or 1986. --142.163.194.130 (talk) 21:37, 22 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Jeopardy!

[edit]

Should his run on Jeopardy! be put into another page and summarized with a "main article James Holzhauer on Jeopardy!" link. 170.10.248.155 (talk) 01:06, 31 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Absolutely not. No other person with consecutive wins on any game show has this level of detail in a separate article. AldezD (talk) 01:33, 31 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Birthday

[edit]

on the May 22nd episode he finishes with $71,885.... could that be a reference to July 18, 1985 his birth date? Before the sidebar had July is his birthday. McDonaldsGuy (talk) 13:18, 26 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]

It could be his birthday, but could also be someone else's birthday, any other significant date, or just a random number. Without a source specifically saying his birthday is July 18,1985, you can not just assume it is. Frank AnchorTalk 19:58, 26 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Japanese heritage

[edit]

On "The Chase" of 14 June 2022, Holzhauer stated directly that he "is Japanese". And the article already mentions he is of Japanese ancestry. He also stated on Jeopardy that he identified with his Japanese grandmother. So, it would seem like he should be covered on Task Force Asian Americans. So why would this [2] be controversial? -- 64.229.88.43 (talk) 10:38, 15 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]

THIS article only has "His grandmother was Japanese and spoke very little English". Why not copy that information, with references, from The Chase article, with the proof that he "identified" with her? That would establish a basis for making such an edit. Right now this article doesn't justify it. There is no other reason not to do it. -- Valjean (talk) (PING me) 11:37, 15 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]
