EPAD controversy

[edit]

I believe Sarkozy's candidacy to become president of the EPAD deserves more development in this article. It is still a developing story in the news though, so a lot of it is speculation, but since someone already edited the article, it would be worth giving it more form. I'd be happy to do it tomorrow unless someone beats me to it. Juliettelucie (talk) 21:19, 12 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Greek descent?

[edit]

Are there any sources to support the claim that Sarkozy is of Greek descent? His grandmother's origins seems to have been Sephardic-Jewish from the Ottoman empire. The fact that the Ottoman city in which a Jewish family lived became a Greek city many years after the family had already moved to France does not give anyone a Greek ancestry. If the village my grandparents left would become Greek tomorrow, it would not make me any more Greek. If there really is a Greek ancestor, it is of course a different matter but if not the category about Greek descent should go.Jeppiz (talk) 20:37, 22 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

No source mentioned for Greek descent so I removed the category. The Jewish descent is well-documented under the article on his father, should it be imported here?Jeppiz (talk) 02:37, 25 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Nicolas Sarkozy's mother is of Greek/Jewish origin but, as far as I know, he is not Jew himself and neither is his son. Perhaps, we could put a "Jewish descent" category instead of the "French Jew" one? Laurent (talk) 09:35, 25 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Jewish descent would make more sense, quite true. As far as I've been able to check, there is no source for Sarkozy's mother being of Greek origin. Her family came from a city that now is in Greece, but they were not of Greek origin and the city was not Greek at the time.Jeppiz (talk) 19:27, 25 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]
