Jib aerodyamics
[edit]The first sentence under "Modern Yachts and Small Craft" is dubious and confusing. A typical sloop will generate roughly 25% of its driving force (this varies widely), so I suppose that's a "minor" contribution, but not insignificant. And of course a boat can be sailed on jib alone, making it the total contribution to driving force. The second sentence is crap. As an airfoil, it generates lift, contradicting the first sentence. Also, all sails are airfoils. Its simply not true that its main contribution is to force laminar flow ("reduce turbulence"). What it does is force attached flow, and change the dynamic pressure and angle of attack of the main sail, in the same manner as a slotted aircraft flap. Additionally a jib is used to balance the yawing moment of the sail plan, reducing the rudder input required to steer a course, and thus reducing drag. Knag (talk) 17:15, 7 May 2015 (UTC)
Cutter rig
[edit]the text defines a cutter rig as two headsails (staysail and jib). In common usage people do call double headsail rigs cutters, however this is not always the case: see Friendship_sloop. There is some ambiguity here. I always thought the cutter rig was defined by the mast placement (50% aft of the forward-most point for a cutter, more like 70% for a sloop), but again there is no clear demarcation. Modern yachts and small craft - jib/genoa comparison image
[edit]The image comparing a jib and genoa describes the genoa as 150% in its caption but this image also appears on the genoa page and calls it a 110% genoa. I am not certain which one is correct.
Chris (talk) 18:35, 8 August 2009 (UTC)
- I think we should just remove the percentage. It doesn't mean much anyway, and 150 is probably wrong, IMO. Cumulus (talk) 11:52, 11 August 2009 (UTC)

function
[edit]The article doesn't explain the function of the jib, nor is there any explanation at Staysail.--207.233.85.155 (talk) 21:40, 28 March 2012 (UTC)
Wrong russian translation
[edit]The correct one should be https://ru.wikipedia.org/wiki/%D0%9A%D0%BB%D0%B8%D0%B2%D0%B5%D1%80 and the pointed to should probably be linked with Foresail Qrilka (talk) 15:39, 9 December 2015 (UTC)

– I am not convinced this is the primary topic when Jib (camera) also has decent popularity and is equally as esoteric. I think there is WP:NOPRIMARY and the disambiguation page should be in the main namespace. ZXCVBNM (TALK) 17:16, 5 May 2018 (UTC)
- Oppose - The sail has long-term significance (especially as the root of the idiom "I like the cut of your jib"). Google Ngram doesn't even find results for the camera term. Manual search of Google books has jib sail at 155k results, jib camera at 15k. -- Netoholic @ 20:38, 5 May 2018 (UTC)
- WP:NOTDICTIONARY states that Wikipedia is not a phrasebook, so idioms should not count towards an article's primacy or lack of it. I don't see the fulfillment of WP:PRIMARYTOPIC here - it doesn't have far more long term significance, and people aren't extremely likely to be looking for the sail when they type in "Jib" as opposed to the crane/camera equipment.ZXCVBNM (TALK) 21:09, 5 May 2018 (UTC)
- Another problem is that I don't see the camera article has any room for expansion. Perhaps it should be renamed to cover both camera cranes and jibs, since their function is identical and differ only in scale? Camera crane currently redirects to crane shot, and the first line of that article delivers readers to Crane (machine) which doesn't mention cameras at all. -- Netoholic @ 03:59, 6 May 2018 (UTC)

- Weak oppose Jib (camera) is an industry-specific term with narrow application. The sailing term is far from esoteric and its history goes back several centuries. Acroterion (talk) 21:14, 5 May 2018 (UTC)
- Leaning towards Support, although for different reasons. Not entirely sure about this one. The sail is a pretty important topic, of course, the camera support is indeed a specialist term and I wouldn't consider it as a rival for primacy, but Jib (crane) also has long-term significance. -- Necrothesp (talk) 13:32, 9 May 2018 (UTC)
