Jim Fixx comments about article
[edit]I have made changes to this article in an attempt maintain the wiki type of format. I am still working on it and welcome any help. References need to be added to the body of the text. KarateLadyKarateLady 15:16, 27 September 2006 (UTC)
A NOTE ON FIXX'S PRE-RUNNING WEIGHT: I'm reading Fixx's book, and he clearly states that his known maximum weight was 213.75 pounds, as attested by a medical report from a physical dated Nov. 25, 1968 (p.xvi). Yet here and elsewhere on the web, there are statements that "he weighed 220 pounds (100 kg)...." I believe this error comes from the publisher's note on the flyleaf, where it's written (for dramatic effect) "When he started running several years ago, Jim Fixx weighed nearly 220 pounds." A 5 pound exaggeration, and then, somewhere along the line, the 'nearly' got lost. For objective truth, however, unless other facts are available, it's far better to stick to what Fixx actually wrote about himself.
I feel there is still lacking on total information about Jim fixx himself considering this is his home pageMikeman370 (talk) 17:56, 7 November 2017 (UTC). — Preceding unsigned comment added by Mikeman370 (talk • contribs) 22:44, 6 November 2017 (UTC)
Thanks for the note on Fixx's weight; this was an especially confusing point for me. I've even found a reference to 240 lbs at the home page of Dr. Gabe Mirkin, MD. Does anyone have information on his height? Fixx's greatest known weight is somewhat useless without understanding how it relates in terms of BMI. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2600:8800:9280:E0B:61A8:D238:B828:74BE (talk) 19:35, 25 November 2018 (UTC)
Supposed Dangers of Running Citations
[edit]Someone wanted a citation for the following quotation:
"However, he is also regularly cited as an example of the possible dangers of exercise."
When I did an internet search to try to provide citations, I was shocked to find a plethora of COUNTER-indications. That is--the idea that running is healthy and that it's not really why Fixx died is the repetitive message. I'd suggest removing the quotation. 206.124.31.24 01:52, 25 January 2007 (UTC)
- I agree, what I found on the internet was a genetic heart condition that killed Jim along with factors of his unhealthy lifestyle before he got into running. It was mentioned that running might have even prolonged his life dispute that.Mikeman370 (talk) 18:01, 14 November 2017 (UTC)
But doesn’t the fact that his arteries were so clogged also question whether his years of running really helped his heart or made him more fit? I guess, what is the definition of “fit” if your arteries are in such poor condition? And even if he was genetically predisposed, doesn’t this argue, then, that no matter how much you exercise, in the end , the genes ”win”? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2600:1014:B069:D173:E5EA:F88F:B160:1A38 (talk) 17:20, 15 March 2019 (UTC)
- What people think it argues is irrelevant. Nothing is getting added to the article about Jim's health unless it is supported by reliable sources that mention him specifically. Damien Linnane (talk) 00:44, 29 August 2021 (UTC)
Trivia - Bill Hicks Reference
[edit]The song title mentioned by the Australian band is more or less a direct quote from Bill Hicks's material, I can only guess that the song has more to do with Bill than Jim, not that I suggest removing it, it just struck me as suggesting that this band was a fan of Jim Fixx. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 141.151.79.88 (talk • contribs) 21:02, March 3, 2007 (UTC)
Removed References
[edit]I have removed the following "references". They are a) not referenced in the article b)do not add any value or information and c) in the case of the latter two seem like link spam. Anyone with another opinion, please state so and re-include the links. BjornVDM 18:04, 18 July 2007 (UTC)

Removed Irrelevant Links
[edit]I removed the following links because they have no bearing on the text of the article: Junk food and Twinkies.
Obesity, Cholesterol, and Healthy diet have some bearing on the article, but I would argue that these are still mostly irrelevant, as well, and should be removed. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 75.169.220.161 (talk) 23:05, 28 September 2008 (UTC)
