References[edit]

The article seems to be primarily sourced from the Ashbrook Ctr web site. In attempting to add as a source his bio at the Ashbrrok Ctr I had a hard time with formatting. The end result is that I messed up the formatting on the only reference that was there (another page on the Ashbrook Ctr site).

This article could use more sources and those that are there need help with formatting.--Canada1776 (talk) 07:12, 18 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

There should be a source citation for the "n---r" quote. To leave it uncited is innapropriate given the nature of the quote.

Congressional career[edit]

Ashbrook served in the House for over two decades. A summary of his congressiona career, which was very notable, is lacking and would be a good addition.--Canada1776 (talk) 07:21, 18 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

How to identify parents of subject[edit]

Why is Mr. Asbrook's mother identified as "Marie Swank" when, at the time of his birth, her name was Marie Ashbrook? The article as written leaves the impression that Ashbrook's parents were unmarried at the time of his birth. Another reader objected to and reversed my change, asserting that, if Mr. Ashbrook had been born to out of wedlock, the article would have said so. That is not the point. The subject of the article was born to Marie Ashbrook, not to Marie Swank. The information it contains is therefore incorrect, and as such, leaves a false impression that the subject of the artile was illegitimate. The convention of identifying married women who take their husband's names as "Maria Ashbrook (nee Swank)" (in ths case) is a succinct and accurate method of dealing with this matter. I would also add that there is a strong feeling today against "dead-naming" - that is, of referring to people by names which they no longer hold, whether at the present time, or at the time when when some past event occurred. Thus, Bruce Jenner won a gold medal, but Caitlyn Jenner has announced her candidacy for governor of California. WmDKing (talk) 19:15, 29 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]
