croquet mallet
[edit]An English translation of Camden's original Latin mallei includes beetle which is described in parentheses (apparently by Sir Francis Bacon) as mallet. The wikipedia article on mallets claims that a beetle has a head diameter of fifteen to eighteen inches in diameter! Most croquet mallets outside of a Bugs Bunny commercial are not like that, are they? I am going to remove the word croquet which is not in the Britannica article, either. http://philological.bham.ac.uk/camden/1581l.html Fotoguzzi (talk) 23:49, 15 November 2011 (UTC)
"Modern research" as the stuff that dreams are made of
[edit]It seems the unreferenced claim about Gregerson "writing a book" (at an unknown time) might have had a rather weak foundation. There is a chapter of the same name, "The Commonwealth of the Word", here - but it includes nothing about Stubbs. As we are usually not in habit advertising unpublished - and, indeed, unwritten - publications, whether scholarly or not, without any proof whatsoever, I suppose this passage would fare better if removed, with a slight chance of return should the promised treatise ever materialize. --Ehitaja (talk) 09:24, 3 December 2018 (UTC)
