"razor and blades" business model?[edit]

The "razor and blades" business model commonly refers to the principle of selling the "razor" for little or no profit -- or even giving it away -- and making the profit on the "blades". However, this article says that the original Gillette razor sold for $5. Even allowing for inefficient manufacturing, it's hard to believe that Gillette was "giving it away" -- that is, that he wasn't making a substantial profit on the razor. If so, then this isn't really "razor and blades" marketing! This needs rethinking.

Also, the writing is a bit sloppy -- too many "very"s, unnecessary information (eg, Gillette was -- surprise! -- working to support his family), etc. I've cleaned this up a bit. WilliamSommerwerck (talk) 12:21, 28 May 2010 (UTC)lyque ahmed
