Wrong dam[edit]

http://www.dellsstewards.com/history_social.html refers to the Wisconsin Dells dam on the Wisconsin river. There is another dam on Dell Creek which impounded Lake Delton, and another behind that which impounds Mirror Lake. I'm fairly certain the Delton dam wasn't built until the 1920s. --Dual Freq (talk) 19:29, 10 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

After further research, it appears that my above comment is also wrong in calling it the "Delton dam". The Delton dam is actually the dam impounding Mirror lake which was built before the dam impounding Lake Delton. That dam appears to be named Dell Creek Dam.("PSC Authorizes Trial Raising of Lake Delton" Wisconsin State Journal. Madison, Wisconsin. Monday, September 22, 1941. Page 4.) The village of Lake Delton was initially known as Norris, then Delton and that's where the Delton dam impounding Mirror Lake got its name. The village of Delton apparently changed its name to Mirror Lake in 1926 to avoid having the same name as the Town of Delton. ("SAUK COUNTY VILLAGE, CHANGES NAME AGAIN" La Crosse Tribune And Leader-Press, The. La Crosse, Wisconsin. Friday, February 12, 1926. Page 4.) I don't know when the name changed again, but there is no Village of Mirror Lake so I'm operating under the assumption that it changed to the Village of Lake Delton after the dam was constructed and Lake Delton was created Sometime in the 1930 - 1931 timeframe based on other articles). --Dual Freq (talk) 22:38, 11 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Tense[edit]

The article needs to remain in the present tense. Was implies that is used to be a lake and that it won't be a lake anymore. Some water remains in the lake, and the governor of Wisconsin has indicated commitment to refilling the rest. Some reports state that the goal is for the dam to be repaired and refilled by the July 4th holiday. Royalbroil 19:46, 11 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Lake and Dam History[edit]

I still haven't found much detail on the construction of the dam. All I can really find is that Chicago millionaire William J. Newman, (Jr.?) was the one behind the dam and the initial development of the lake, constructing the Dell View hotel and a beach. He was also instrumental in the positioning of US 12 through the village to generate traffic as well, donating land for the highway. US 12 forms part of the main strip of hotels and attractions. I also found a c.1930 article about a plan for a lock to connect Lake Delton with the lower dells allowing lower dells boat tours to access lake Delton (which the amphibious DUKW's would eventually do), though that article was mostly about the positioning of US 12 and the planned (now defunct) Lake Delton airport. That's about all I can find on the net and without looking for a book on the subject, not sure if its worth adding to the article. I put this on the Wisconsin project page yesterday, maybe it will be helpful to others at this article instead of worrying about changing present tense to past tense or add links to photo galleries, maybe someone can locate some more historical material about the lake's formation and the dam's construction, ownership etc. Thanks for the help. --Dual Freq (talk) 00:56, 13 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
