Merger[edit]

  checkY Merger complete.

It has been proposed that this article be merged into the Wakefield Trinity Wildcats 2009 article, since this article fails to meet the notablity guidelines set by WikiProject rugby league for the following reason:

  • Any current or former rugby league player who has played none or limited first grade rugby league should not be eligible for an article unless it meets the general notability guideline including reliable secondary sources. However, normally these players only have information listed on their club's official website, which is a violation of Independent of the subject in the general notability guideline.

Please remember that, with respect, Wikipedia is not a memorial site, and therefore the tragic circumstances in which the subject died do not necessarily mean the subject is notable enough to merit its own article. Those wishing to pay their respects or share memories should do so on an appropriate medium, for instance, this page on gonetoosoon.org. GW(talk) 09:45, 23 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

He made no appearances for the first team. This should be redirected and merged. Sad he's died, but he didn't achieve notability in life. --Dweller (talk) 16:05, 23 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

His death was largely notable, it attracted a lot of press and media attention, and being as Wikipedia has a lot of pages on both dead and alive nobodys who are solely notable because of the press attention. I think this page should remain. At least until the outcome of any investigation has been made public. The circumstances are likely to change, and to an extent this is becoming a test piece for British Rugby League and may set precedents for furture regulations. For this reason, I think the page should remain for the timebeing. Mtaylor848 (talk) 17:07, 24 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

His death may have been notable, but he, or rather, his career, wasn't. The circumstances of his death, the effect on the club, including any outcomes, can be covered on the club pages. The possibility of a precendent isn't a valid reason, see WP:CRYSTAL.  florrie  22:18, 24 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Strong keep, in the same way that you wouldn't merge Ray Chapman with the Cleveland Indians article. I'm actually from Yorkshire and this story appeared in the newspapers for about 7 days in a row, plus as pointed out we have a category for "death in sports". He's not particularly notable for his career, no, but his death was a story of national importance. Mglovesfun (talk) 07:20, 1 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]
There's a real difference between Ray Chapman (who played at the highest level) and Leon Walker (who did not). Chapman's death - a direct result of a sporting incident - led to changes within the game. Not so with Leon Walker. He was a young footballer who died while playing the game. Tragic, but not an event that will change the game. The deaths of Adam Watene and Leon Walker and their impact on the club could be part of the club article or club history page.  florrie  08:25, 1 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]
