Contradiction in Gross collections

[edit]

Hi, I'm Political Cricketer. I found that the references which are showing the gross collections of Dookudu and Magadheera are looking contradict to each other. The article from the Hindu is showing that the film Magadheera's collections are over 1 billion. But the reference which is cited to Dookudu, tells Dookudu is the first Telugu movie to cross 1 billion mark, which contradicts the article in Hindu.

Since Telugu films are not properly mentioned with gross figures, it's better not to keep the section of worldwide gross collections.

Agree with that? PK talk 10:31, 23 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]

New section

[edit]

In Gross Collections you need to specify a column with No of Languages released. And the information there is wrong. Have a look at this (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_highest-grossing_Indian_films) Which had highest gross collections of telugu showing correct information. Attarintiki Daredi has collected more than Magadheera. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Venkateshkancherla7 (talkcontribs) 14:11, 11 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Share collections

[edit]

In this edit I flagged the Worldwide collections section with {{importance-section}}. The scope of this article is "highest-grossing Telugu films". "Share" is absolutely not the same thing as gross, thus, the share values are far beyond the scope of this article. If this article was "Overly-detailed financial data related to Telugu films", then we might have a valid argument for including it, (it would be an idiotic article to conceive of) but this article's scope is clear, and there is no precedent that I am aware of across the Film WikiProject for the inclusion of distributor financials. Further, with no independent auditing of the financial figures, as western films receive with sources like BoxOfficeMojo.com, all the share values are estimates, making their integrity extraordinarily questionable. Wikipedia is being used as a clearinghouse for dubious data. The gross values are already sketchy, but we're expected to vocalise the estimates of a film's every financial micro detail? Pure rubbish. Cyphoidbomb (talk) 17:40, 10 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Since nobody has expressed an opinion in a month, the section was cut here. Cyphoidbomb (talk) 16:59, 10 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Comments requested - Proposal to cut INRConvert template from this and similar highest-grossing articles

[edit]

Please participate in the discussion at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Film/Indian cinema task force#PROPOSAL: The INRConvert template should be cut from various list articles if you have thoughts about whether or not {{INRConvert}} should be removed from highest-grossing Indian film articles. Share records

[edit]

In this edit I deleted the Records section, which contained a table of opening day records organized around distributor share rather than gross. The article title is highest-grossing Telugu films. The scope of the article then, is gross, not nett gross, not nett, not other magical figures. Including share presents an apples-to-oranges comparison between the gross and nett figures. There are other concerns too, like if one film gets tax exempt status and another film doesn't, that's going to affect the distributor share, but it won't actually tell us which film did better in terms of box office sales. Since nobody has previously discussed the inclusion of this content, and the inclusion of this content isn't indicated at MOS:FILM and the content doesn't appear in comparable articles like List of highest-grossing films, I have removed the content. Feel free to seek consensus for inclusion. Cyphoidbomb (talk) 15:42, 22 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]

US collections

[edit]

Why are we focusing on US collections in this article? With no exaggeration, as of this edit the bulk of this article is US gross. Not general international gross, not domestic, but US. Makes no sense. Also, it's seemingly arbitrary, since the cut-off for inclusion was that the films fall into the "one million dollar club". This "club" crap is completely inappropriate for an encyclopedia. We're not drooling fans, we're supposed to be writing an academic resource. The result when we use arbitrary metrics, is you wind up with a table with an arbitrary 23 entries. This needs to be fixed. I'd limit the US values to 10 examples or something. Aaaand, there's not even any gross figures in the summary table at the top of the page. So we have rankings without any useful context. I don't think this article was thought through very clearly. Share is not gross

[edit]

In this edit I removed a great deal of content, because it was beyond the scope of this article. The article is titled "highest grossing Telugu films". "Share" is not gross. Share is what's left over after subtracting expenses and entertainment taxes, no? So these figures are significantly out of the scope of this article. Further, I removed all the "blockbuster" "super blockbuster" "biggest blockbuster" shit. Wikipedia is a neutral encyclopedia. We're not here to regurgitate promotional, hyperbolic verdicts. There is no objective way to distinguish a "biggest blockbuster" from an an "all-time blockbuster". And personally I'd assume "biggest blockbuster" would be in the #1 spot, not the #4 spot, but hey, that's why I'm not running the Indian film trades. Highest-grossing films by year

[edit]

The Highest-grossing films by year section is problematic. All we have is a list of films and their grosses. We have very few, if any, references that say explicitly "___ was the highest-grossing film of ___ year". For example, the table tells us that Dookudu grossed 101 crore in 2011. How do we know that there weren't other Telugu films that grossed more than that? The references don't explicitly say that. This is problematic and the section should probably be deleted if we can't prove any of these claims. There are other issues as well, including that we are using blogs like Andhraboxoffice.com and in some cases a discussion forum as references. Cyphoidbomb (talk) 16:26, 20 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

@Cyphoidbomb: As far as Telugu box office considered, most reliable tracking is done by those type blogs only. Times of India, India Today etc. blindly following some of these blogs and putting some random articles. These type of articles are less reliable than those blogsPK talk 19:31, 6 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]
@Political Cricketer: We are under no obligation to adhere to shitty reporting. If a reliable source is using Andhraboxoffice, which doesn't even disclosure what journalists or experts are behind it, we should not be using the reliable source for that purpose. Many "reliable" sources make lazy mistakes and publish crap: Kabali's financial info was a clusterfuck thanks to Indian Express and Financial Express. A little over a week ago I saw India Today citing a random Twitter user about Petta's gross. Awful. Your claim, however, that the blogs are more reliable is baseless, since nobody knows the margin of error these blogs report with, and a faceless blog has no corruption oversight like a publicly-traded newspaper might. A studio could easily pay ABO to publish whatever figures they want. You might personally have faith in their guesstimates, but unless you're actually performing audits and comparing Andhraboxoffice's reporting against actual financial ledgers, your assertion of accuracy is just blind faith, no disrespect intended. More poor sources

[edit]

@DeepakVarma31: You've made a lot of changes to this article since 21 January and I'm rather concerned at the deviation from community standards that many of your edits have had to the article. In these edits[1][2][3] (and probably more), you've introduced some really poor references into the article: oracleglobe.com, pycker.com, Pinkvilla, tollywoodboxoffice.in, telegraphstar.com, etc. It's like you've done zero actual research to see what sorts of references the Wikipedia community considers reliable, (like those at WP:ICTF#Guidelines on sources) and have instead just found high figures published on faceless blogs and faceless websites run by anonymous people. I don't find this suitable, and it's certainly inconsistent with our community standards. See our reliable sourcing guidelines. I think this article should be rolled back to before you started editing, and rebuilt with proper sources. And unfortunately, any changes you've made to the film articles with these poor references should be changed. We only care what mainstream reliable sources with established reputations for fact-checking and accuracy have to say about any subject. Cyphoidbomb (talk) 23:10, 12 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]

This might be a smart place to start. Cyphoidbomb (talk) 23:58, 12 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]
I've indefinitely blocked this user, because there were multiple instances of them cherrypicking crappy references and inflating and deflating the data in these crappy references to make some films look better and some films worse. The bulk of what I found was detailed here. In this edit, I revert to a version prior to their disruptive changes. Cyphoidbomb (talk) 01:44, 13 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]
