To be honest, this list is nonsense. Little penguins do not breed in well defined colonies and may occur along vast stretches of coast. For New Zealand we could add about 80% of the country's beaches, bays and coves - and we would end up with a list of some 10.000 place names or more. Unless we put them all in, this list is utterly inaccurate and false to say the least. In my opinion it should be taken off Wikipedia.

You can nominate it at Articles for Deletion, if you feel strongly. Alternatively, as a compromise, introducing some notability thresholds would make it more sensible (e.g. size, fame, well-studiedness). I've copied the non-POV stuff from your comment above into the article. SP-KP 10:41, 27 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]
The current version still seems odd, at least to a New Zealander. I think some threshold for inclusion is necessary. I'll try to come up with something sensible. -- Avenue (talk) 08:03, 12 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
  • Information in the Little Penguin article counters the notion in the first comment above ("Little penguins do not breed in well defined colonies and may occur along vast stretches of coast."). The Little Penguin states (as of this post) "They exhibit site fidelity to their nesting colonies and nesting sites over successive years." and "Little Penguins live year-round in large colonies, with each individual breeding pair forming a burrow in which to raise their chicks (of which two are born at a time, usually about 2 days apart)." While colonies may exist along extensive coastal areas, they appear to actually breed in well-defined colonies. Northamerica1000(talk) 21:56, 4 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Tidying

[edit]

The list needs further improvement. I have removed the 'Northern Australia' section - there are no Little Penguins in northern Australia. In any case, the Bass Strait islands are in south-eastern Australia, though citing 'Bass Strait islands' as a colony is useless - there are numerous islands in Bass Stait, some of which have colonies. 'Hobart' as a colony is ridiculous - it is a city, any mention of a colony there needs to be much more specific. Maias (talk) 00:51, 8 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]
