Interesting page. Needs more structure and detail but there is a parallel work ongoing which will supply this - an experienced editor volunteered, at the request of Global Project: Rivers - to make this type of List page. Delays due to his / her personal time have occurred, and (I was a past contributor asked about this topic), I gather there were also challenges on references, very much needed, but a book was on the way from Waterstones. 118.127.29.47 (talk) 08:08, 29 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

It has not been made clear, above, what is desired in the way of "structure and detail". The page is presented as a list only, like many other Wikipedia lists, rather than as an attempt at a fully-fledged article about Dublin's rivers which would, in any case, be entitled "Rivers of County Dublin", as opposed to "List of...".
As such — as a list — it is not clear what further "structure" might be offered. Minor columnar structuring has been embedded to shorten the length of the list within browsers.
As for detail, this is the most comprehensive list of Dublin's rivers I have seen anywhere (although I am still missing a few), and since this is not an article, but a list, then no descriptive details of the rivers have been included, because then it would no longer be a list.
Perhaps the contributor above would care to write an article about the rivers of Dublin to complement this list; it could be interesting to read it. (I am an experienced editor, too.) --O'Dea (talk) 22:12, 30 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
No offence mate, a page like this should exist. But without some bit of detail its use is limited. A list of suburbs for example is fairly intelligible on its own and with a map becomes very clear but with this topic you'd need very good maps to do that. And I did not question experience but topic expertise is also needed- the original version coolly included multiple names for the same stream as if they were different streams (at least five cases). But anyway the other editor working on this is also here now, so combined efforts will move it all forward. 'Luck! 118.127.29.47 (talk) 05:20, 2 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]
As for writing an article, thanks but I'll leave that to someone with more detailed knowledge. 118.127.29.47 (talk) 05:35, 2 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Indeed this is interesting stuff. What was the source? That discussion on the Rivers of County Dublin Talk page? Or that booklet from Wikimedia Commons? As to the comment above, advanced Lists can have some detail, and I think this would be nice, as right now this is perhaps a little too "listy" with no context at all, and frankly most of the items will probably never have articles, and many would simply not be Notable enough to be allowed separate articles. Great work. Did you also do the Template? That's also good work but perhaps should only have the more significant items? Something similar arose with Dublin Parks and a monster list was cut back sharply after a few weeks. But maybe leave it long for a bit to see if people will do articles on some more rivers / streams. 85.226.5.158 (talk) 05:08, 1 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Full-scale list, action from Category page

[edit]

Well, that was a surprise - I was moving to set-up this page, and here it is, a week or two old. I will continue with the transfer of material, probably tomorrow, but first, comments welcome - User:SeoR/Sandbox/List_of_Rivers_of_County_Dublin. This list is based, per work done after the announcements on the Category: Rivers in County Dublin page, and the preceding notification etc. on the Ireland Project page, on a Featured List example provided by a member of the Rivers Global Project. It should have been here much sooner, but this is not an easy topic to reference.
Looking at the discussion above, I can say that I also considered a general article, but this approach was recommended as a start. And using a format like this puts the rivers and streams in useful order, making their location and place in respective systems clear.
I will double-check the list here against the one I have prepared, and then finish initial referencing, and transfer. And I will also move over some of the informative Talk page content from the Category page. Now, anyone with useful photos? SeoR (talk) 23:10, 1 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

And, reminded by writer above, thanks to all editors who contributed to this exploration. SeoR (talk) 23:11, 1 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Now that's informative. Go for it. Whoever would have thought there were so many bits of running water in old Dublin? 118.127.29.47 (talk) 05:33, 2 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Implementing detailed list, per Featured List (river) example. Will wait 1-2 days before clearing Category Talk page, partly to here. SeoR (talk) 17:45, 2 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Good stuff, and glad to see artificial watercourse the Abbey Stream gone in the process. I wonder could the names be supplied as Gaeilge too, though perhaps not on EN wikipedia, and given how long Dublin region is anglicised, maybe many don't have genuine Irish forms? 178.177.144.5 (talk) 21:56, 2 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Coleman's Brook, another artificial one, is also gone, good. I am adding a note re the messing about done with the Racecourse Stream meeting. 178.177.155.176 (talk) 20:37, 3 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Column for Irish language forms, or line in name box?

[edit]

I did a little tidying earlier, and reading this page and around, I wonder would it be good to add a column for names as Gaeilge. I guess it in part depends on how many exist, and if less than 30% or some similar threshold, maybe just add Irish forms in the current name box as additional line items. 194.237.142.17 (talk) 08:41, 18 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]
