Details of birthplace

[edit]

Hi. This may be splitting hairs (but it also depends on one's viewpoint), but I believe Lon Warneke was born in Owley, Arkansas, which is a small community a few miles southwest of Mt. Ida. He did attend and graduate from Mt. Ida High School. He is also buried in Owley.

Information about the place of his birth (Owley) is from the 2011 Montgomery County (Arkansas) Visitor & Relocation Guide, published by the Mt. Ida Area Chamber of Commerce. I traveled to the Owley Cemetery to view his grave.

For clarification, I called the Montgomery County Assessor in Mt. Ida. That office confirmed that Owley is not in the "city limits" of Mt. Ida. But that a person born in Owley might be considered to be "from" Mt. Ida. I am not sure about official birth certificates or anything. Owley does not have a post office and maybe not even a store, so it is may generally be considered part of the "greater Mt. Ida area."

Owley is pronounced OWL-lee: the O- is like the o in owl, not the O's in Ozone. Of course, how one pronounces "owl" differs from person to person; but if someone should say "alley" they would be much closer in correct pronunciation than should they say "OH-lee." Editing and Improving this article

[edit]

Hi. According to wikipedia, the article as it currently stands (6/16/2011) is "start class" quality, which is only one step up from "stub." Wikipedia describes start class as "An article that is developing, but which is quite incomplete and may require further reliable sources" and "The article has a usable amount of good content but is weak in many areas. Quality of the prose may be distinctly unencyclopedic..." Wikipedia's Editing Suggestions for a start class article is "Provision of references to reliable sources should be prioritised; the article will also need substantial improvements in content and organisation."

I suggest editing the article to bring at least to the C Class of Wikipedia's quality level.

I tentatively suggest C-class, because information on Warneke is difficult to get hold of. To my knowledge, no book has been written about him and magazine articles are scarce (and costly). At any rate, certainly the article could be improved by providing additional information and also by the introduction of sections. I would tentatively suggest sections of "Early Life" (from birth through minor league days), "MLB Career" (which could be split between his years as a pitcher and that as an umpire), "Post-baseball Career" (as a judge, etc), retirement, death, burial, etc. These are common categories for sections in articles about baseball players.

As for additional information, I have found two or three sources (one hard copy and a couple online sources); additionally a lot of information can be gleaned from the online Baseball Reference. I am not talking just about annual and career stats, all-star game appearances, etc, but also highlights that can be found using the Play Index Tool. Comparison of Warneke to other pitchers of his era and even other pitchers from Arkansas can be especially illustrative of how good a player he was -- and provide more content.

My only reason for wanting to improve this article is because I am huge baseball fan, I have always liked Lon Warneke as a player (I never met him), and I visited his grave site recently. I happen to have family in Montgomery County Arkansas. Not that this makes me an expert, but I am a good researcher and writer and thus would like to apply these skills to this article. I do not wish to alienate anyone with my suggestions or article editing. But I guess any arguments over content, style, changes, etc can be discussed here. Photograph

[edit]

As much as i love the Goudy baseball card, I think a public domain photograph is available. Perhaps we could move the Goudy image to a different section. This is just a suggestion. Sp3lly (talk) 19:37, 16 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

This article under major construction, as of July 2011

[edit]

Hi. Obviously this article is incomplete. It has major gaps in its coverage. But I have already greatly expanded and improved on what was here. I am in the process of filling in the gaps and adding detail where appropriate. I received a hard copy of the most extensive primary source (Duren, 1992) and I am exercising due diligence in editing the article. Sp3lly (talk) 04:52, 22 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]
