Settlement of Madagascar
[edit]@Verosaurus: I have a question about this statement:
- It is possible that scholars and artisans of 10th century recorded the events of the Ma'anyan people evacuating in large numbers to Africa on outrigger sailboats like those depicted on the stone reliefs of Borobudur in 945 to 946 AD.[1]
- ^ Sanusi Pane (1965). Sedjarah Indonesia, Volumes 1-2. Balai Pustaka. pp. 58–59.
Unfortunately I do not have a copy of Sedjarah Indonesia, so want to ask you about what Sanusi Pane actually writes. Does he explicitly connect the depictions in Borodudur to the migraition to Madagascar?
Another thing, the connection of the Malagasy people to the Ma'anyan and other ethnic groups of southeastern Kalimantan is of course undisputed, but we should avoid to plainly identify the pre-Malagasy settlers with the Ma'anyans. Linguistically, Dusun Witu and Paku are just as close to Malagasy as Ma'nayan is, so we should probably rephrase to "Ma'anyan and other Southeast Barito-speaking peoples". –Austronesier (talk) 08:58, 4 September 2020 (UTC)
Hi Austronesier, I don't have the book either, so I couldn't figure whether he did connect the depictions of the Borobudur or not. And for your second discussion - I'm not a linguist or interested in Bornean language so I have no opinion on that. Verosaurus (talk) 01:31, 7 September 2020 (UTC)
- I have been able to trace most of these statements to Kumar's chapter in the Reid festschrift. Much of this is highly speculative (like much of Kumar's work), and only peripherally related to the Ma'anyan people. I have removed it here per WP:UNDUE. –Austronesier (talk) 12:05, 7 September 2020 (UTC)
