tradesman or merchant
[edit]the vocational qualification "Kaufmann" in German-speaking countries is difficult to translate but indicates a commercial role in an office. the word 'merchant' seems a bit old-fashioned as The Merchant of Venice is Der Kaufmann von Venedig in German. the term used here 'tradesman' makes it sound as if he's a window cleaner so a better translation is needed.
